Pooing under sofa

So, 16 year old kitty accidentally pooed by the side of the sofa, I cleaned it all up with an aqua vac and stuff to strip the smell off.

Now she thinks this is an acceptable place to go and I keep coming home to carnage.

She doesn't do this anywhere else in the house only here and in the litter tray.

I have been thinking of buying a pet electric shock mat from amazon to dissuade her from going in this area as it's foul and nothing else has helped.

It's battery operated so obviously it won't give a proper shock but will just give her a fright and the idea is she will not go to this area again while the training mat is down.

My friends all say this is cruel but I don't think a battery operated device is cruel and of course I will test it properly on myself first before putting it done.

has anyone used one of these?

No! Put another litter tray down under the sofa and gradually move it. Take her to the vets as mystery shits of often signs of underlying stuff.

No, you definitely shouldn't do that. Where is her tray? I second the advice to get another tray and gradually move it. Either that or just put down puppy training pads under the sofa to make it easier to deal with.

She's old, and this sort of thing is par for the course as cats go into old age. So don't traumatise her, just do you best to deal with it kindly.

I have spent a kings ranson on the vet, she is going in to have her thyroid irradiated next month to cure her hyperthyroidism, she has chronic diarrhoea which the vet has been unable to cure for 2 years and every test under the sun including allergy test, all inconclusive, she has vitamin B12 injections and steroid injections every month, sometimes twice a month if it's bad. Despite this she does get to all the litter trays I have for her upstairs and down easily.
The sofa pooing has developed as a bad habit. She went there once and now thinks it's an ok crap spot.
The nearest litter tray is literally 4 of my steps away from the sofa.
i really don't want to start putting litter trays in my small living room.
I'll try putting one there and moving it slowly though, that sounds like a plan.

I have to say before the B12 injections she would go anywhere and everywhere, now she just goes in the litter trays and by the sofa so she has improved a lot.

Did you use an enzyme cleaner on the poo stains ?

MrsBertBibby · 30/01/2019 07:46

Can you put food there? They tend not to toilet near food.

statetrooperstacey · 30/01/2019 07:47

Put some tin foil down. Most cats don't like it. Can u shut her out that room unless u are there?

Mia184 · 30/01/2019 14:42

Can you put boxes or suitcases under the sofa so that there is no space available for her? BTW, do you have the same litter in every litter tray? If so, maybe try a different one?

madcatladyforever · 30/01/2019 18:42

Great advice thanks folks. I'll give all of those things a go.

I tend not to shut her out of the living room because you have to go through there to get to the bedrooms and the old girl does love cosying up on my bed when I am at work.

She does have a large dog bed filled with fluffy blankets in the kitchen but it's quite cold in there so I don't like to have her in there all day.
