Wet food

Hi all,
My kitten is 7 months old and appears to be going off the pouches of wet food. Is it okay if she just wants dry food and water?
She currently has Waitrose kitten pouches and lAMBS dry food - I put a bit of both into her bowl but she tends to ignore the wet and just eat the dry.

Our kitten is 5 months and loves Applaws Kitten tuna, he gobbles it down in minutes. Maybe worth trying a different type?

My kitten goes through phases - at the moment she is off her dry food.

Wet food is better for them than dry - could you try some different flavours? I have transitioned my 8 month old on to adult cat food and she loves the bigger flavour variety. Clean bowl which we haven’t seen in a while!!!

Most kitten food is very similar to adult food, and my vet thinks it’s just a marketing ploy. I use Lily’s kitchen, and my kitten has been very excited by the beef flavour and lamb has also been a big hit

Thanks for the replies. The Waitrose kitten food has 4 different flavours. I do give her tuna and tinned salmon sometimes. I think I might move her onto adult food - was trying to wait until she was 12 months but have seen on other threads that now she's been neutered it would be okay to give her adult food.

If you're going to feed mainly or only dry, maybe look for a high protein grain free one. IAMS is not a good quality food... In general wet food is better for them though so I would also try different types of wet.

I would like to persevere with wet food really. Now I know that adult food would be fine I'm going to try her on Lilly's kitchen. My local supermarkets don't stick the kitten version, which is why I was giving her Waitrose own brand. I didn't realize IAMBS is no good, so will swap that - what is a better quality dry food brand? I think she likes the dry food better because it reminds her of dreamies Smile

I get lily’s kitchen on amazon - rthere are great deals and it can work out much cheaper.

I have just ordered a pack of 19 lamb flavour for £10.00.

Dollymixture22 · 27/01/2019 17:51

I use applaws dry. Still using up the last of her kitten food as she only gets a small amount every night.

But again great deals available - amazon subscribe service is good 15% discounts is you subscribe to five or more items.

Thank you. Will look into ordering from Amazon - would be easier to get all her stuff from there really.

Mine eat Encore dry that I get from asda (80% meat). Mine have gone through countless wet food brands as they are fussy buggers

dementedpixie · 27/01/2019 21:59

I serve wet and dry food in separate bowls

Hungrypuffin · 27/01/2019 22:07

You want a grain free, high meat content, sugar free food. Lily’s is excellent but my cats don’t like it. Natures Menu is v good and Waitrose sell it. Also, look at zooplus, which sells a lot of German brands (tend to be much better quality than UK food). Avoid Sheba, Felix etc which are only 4% meat and full of sugar. Also, check any food is complete, not complementary (a pp mentioned Applaws - their dry food is complete, but their wet food annoyingly isn’t).

In terms of dry, I leave a bowl down for my cats to snack on and give them wet twice a day. Again, you want anything grain free, rice free and with a high meat content. Applaws is a very good dry brand and my cats love it.

dementedpixie · 27/01/2019 22:22

They are not only 4% meat but 4% named meat. They have meat and animal derivatives which is still meat. To say it is chicken flavour means at least 4% chicken must be contained. Mine don't like the 'good' stuff as most is pate style and they won't eat it

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 28/01/2019 07:42

The Waitrose wet food was the highest meat content I could find in my home town that was specifically for kittens. I will get the Lilly's adult and try to give wet and dry separately and see if prefers that - at the moment I hide the wet under some of the dry so she gets the crunchy stuff but might eat the wet as well. But she is smart and only eats a little, then ignores the rest.
Will have a look for Nature's Menu. I did buy some Meowing Heads dry food but I thought she might be getting bored so got the IAMBS for variety, but I think the Meowing Heads might be better quality (judging by the price at least).
Thanks again everyone. Much appreciated
