Is there a lazy breed which doesn't bother catching mice??

My partner really wants a cat. I love cats too, as do the DC.

The problem is though that I am utterly terrified of mice/rats.

I wouldn't want a house cat who couldn't go outside though (and frankly that wouldn't work anyway...we live in the countryside and the doors are open to the garden all the time in summer)

So my question is, are there any particular breeds that just don't bother with the whole mouse thing?

I don't know, but my sister has a tabby and a tuxedo cat. She's had the tabby for 7 years and he's never brought in mice!

DonnaDarko · 26/01/2019 07:34

The tuxedo brought in a moth once lol

RedForShort · 26/01/2019 07:39

It'll depend on the cat I think.

There may be someone who knows more than me be about to tell you about a different breed.

Some cats are just rubbish hunters. But unless they are older when you get them you won't know this fact.

BillywilliamV · 26/01/2019 07:40

How about an older rescue cat, they grow out of mousing (a bit) as they get older,.

ShannonRockallMalin · 26/01/2019 07:40

I think it entirely depends on the personality of the cat! Of my current three, one brings in rodents ( including fully grown dead rat once, don’t know how she got it through the cat flap), one sadly brings in the odd bird, and the other is obsessed with flies!

IME, cats get less predatory as they get older, so could you adopt an older cat from a rescue place? They’ll be able to tell you if the cat seems to be a laid back, homely type.

Just think, on the plus side if you ever have a mouse infestation your cat can catch them for you Grin

Op, I'm exactly the same and it was one of the reason I held off getting a cat as there would be no one to dispose of them! I've now got two rescue Persians, and they could t catch a cold. They have absolutely no interest in hunting. And are indoor cats any way. Though they have access to the garden. I'm safe!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/01/2019 08:21

Even my newer car who is a bit more cat like than the other two doesn't show any interest, my friend also has two who likewise don't hunt z

Toddlerteaplease · 26/01/2019 08:22

Persians are an awesome breed. Sweet docile and affectionate.

Elzbells · 26/01/2019 08:24

My Persian runs away if a bird lands in the garden. He's also terrified of the hamster.

Amazing cats as well, he loves the garden but has never been interested in leaving it.

lemonface · 26/01/2019 08:38

Two ragdolls. So lovely and never brought us anything except hair bands Grin

lemonface · 26/01/2019 08:39

Also never go further than the gardens

Mia184 · 26/01/2019 08:42

My cat was middle-aged when I got her from the shelter and had previously been kept indoors. She enjys watching birds but doesn‘t go after them. Plus I play with her a lot - she enjoys playing „evil kitty“ and kicking, scratching and biting the hell out of a feathery thing.

WinterWife · 26/01/2019 08:42

Another one who's cats go no further than the garden. They are mostly house cats but if it's a sunny day I'll let them roam outside but they never go far from the house. I'd get an older rescue cat OP so you can have an idea for their personality beforehand.

OVienna · 26/01/2019 08:43

Persian, I venture. Also there are great rescues about.

immortalmarble · 26/01/2019 08:43

In my experience, young females are the worst for hunting and older male cats rarely seem to hunt (a bit like lions?) But it depends.

TheQueef · 26/01/2019 08:45

I have a Burmese.
She doesn't even kill spiders.
Occasionally injures moths if she gets them in the thunderdome (bath) but only by accident.
As well as Buddhism she yells, falls off things and drinks coffee.

Heyha · 26/01/2019 08:47

I think it's an individual thing. I've got two cats born on a farm to a serious hunting mother. One catches things quite regularly but usually plays with or eats them in the garden. The other one is practically agoraphobic and only goes out twice a day to toilet despite having a free access cat flap and his brother being in and out all day 🤷

MrsBertBibby · 26/01/2019 08:52

If you're going for a standard cat I think it really is the luck of the draw, but a rescue should have some idea about adult cats.

My current old lady and her late brother were rubbish hunters throughout, she has managed the odd spider, and I once found them looking rather shell shocked toying with a mouse who I rescued, but generally moths are a step too far for them.

My previous pair were bloody psychopaths. Rats, squirrels, you name it. We lost one, and his brother calmed down a bit, but not by much. We almost always had a small rodent scuttling about the house trying to get back out.

EmmaC78 · 26/01/2019 08:54

I have a Birman. More chance if me becoming a supermodel than him catching a mouse.

DippyAvocado · 26/01/2019 08:55

My cat is the laziest in existence - sleeps at least 21 hours a day. Never goes beyond the garden. She has still managed to bring in a few nice (2 alive - one dropped on my bed in the middle of the night!). It's only been 3 mice in the 18 months we've had her though, so not a regular occurrence.

I think the only way to avoid it is if you get a cat designed to be an indoor cat.

DippyAvocado · 26/01/2019 08:57

A few mice. They definitely weren't nice.

whifflesqueak · 26/01/2019 08:58

We have one Siamese/tonkinese who has never even tried to catch a mouse and another Siamese who catches several a day and pigeons and rabbits and the occasional pheasant.

I think it depends on the cat.

cricketmum84 · 26/01/2019 09:15

I have a tuxedo that brings in moths too 😂

HouseyMcHouseFace · 26/01/2019 09:18

I have a Maine Coon kitten which is planned on keeping as an indoor cat as I worry about wildlife. He’s 15 weeks old and has already managed to present me with 5 mice that he’s found in the attic. He’s going to be lethal in a few months!

Ollivander84 · 26/01/2019 09:28

Mine failed catching a spider. He once brought me a leaf and looked very proud. Adult rescue, he couldn't catch a mouse if I dangled one in front of him (I'm terrified of them!)
