Hairballs

Hi, my cat is 10 years old. Lately he's really struggling with choking on hairballs. Is there anything I can do or give him to help him get rid of the hairballs? Thank you 😊

Is he long haired? How often do you groom him?

StandUpForYourRights · 25/01/2019 08:27

Olive oil dribbled over wet food, tuna in sunflower oil, catalax, lactulose. All have worked for me in the past.

Happyinheels · 25/01/2019 08:58

@Wolfiefan No, he's not particularly long haired. He does moult a lot. He doesn't like being brushed so I should probably groom him more than I do.
@StandUpForYourRights thank you. I'll try those ideas.

Perhaps try different grooming tools. My current pair hate a brush but love a zoom groom.
Old girl HATED grooming and as a semi long haired it had to happen. I have her catnip and then groomed her when she had lost the plot. Grin
If you remove the loose fur then you shouldn’t get the furball effect.

Malt paste. If you cat doesn‘t want to eat it, spread a bit of it on his paw. www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_treats_catnip/pastes

You can get hairball paste. I put it in my cats paw for him to lick off, he looked at it, tucked his paw under him and went to sleep Hmm

I use the Royal Canin anti Hairball dry food alternated with their Indoor Cat dry food. Both of mine are indoor cats, and 2.5 years in I have found a grand total of 2 hairballs both belonging to Boycat. You can also get anti hairball Dreamies Grin

Short coated, but have lovely downy undercoat which drifts all over everything.

Liquid paraffin. A couple of ml delivered in mouth with a syringe ( recommended by the vet) worked on old girl

A combination of the furminator used once a week and hairball paste pretty much stopped my boy having hairballs, which come back when we get out of that routine. Otherwise he is an exceptionally pukey cat who can throw them up several times a week.
