Cat with a food allergy - what to feed him?

My cat (13) has had allergic reactions from time to time for a number of years. Thought it was flea allergy dermatitis but pretty much excluded that now but it's still happening. He gets a steroid injection at the vet to stop the itch but the vet now thinks it might be food related. I'm going to try an exclusion diet and I'm currently cooking him some fresh chicken and will just feed him this for a week to see if that helps.
Has anyones cat had a food allergy and what triggered it and what did you feed them?

What food were they on? Did it contain wheat? Cats can often be intolerant to grains

WatcherOfTheNight · 21/01/2019 19:40

As demented said is it grains Kitty is allergic to?

I buy my mistress her food on zooplus, they have have a good variety of grain free ,high meat content foods at a reasonable price.

I read all the ingredients too as I don't believe cats need sugar & cheap fillers that are added to the usual brands .

Be aware you can't feed a cat just chicken breast as it doesn't have taurine in it. I believe dark meat contains this so I'd stick with legs, etc, over breast meat

rosydreams · 21/01/2019 19:46

mine threw up all the time with most foods but grain free is much better

organicapricot · 21/01/2019 20:32

Thank you. His biscuits are hills science diet but that contains maize. His wet food is felix so I imagine that is full of grain based filler. Ill try him on the chicken and a grain free biccy. @Tunebeo they are legs so hopefully he will still have some of the minerals he needs

@organicapricot if you look at the ingredients you'll see they are not the best .

My girl has dry : purizon ,wild freedom or the grain free nutro

Wet : wild freedom ,animonda vom Feinstein
My star mousse,mr stussy & other grain free high meat content foods.

Zooplus do trial sizes ,I bet you notice a huge difference on a good food .

WatcherOfTheNight · 21/01/2019 20:44

Other than that & if your cat will eat it ,look into raw .
There are a lot of sites giving the correct ratios

Mine has feline IBS, she's on Pro plan veterinary diets, it's a prescription food that stops her having constant diarrhoea unless the 3 year old sneaks her ham...

Toddlerteaplease · 21/01/2019 22:22

I have awful problems with Cheddar vomiting on what ever I fed her. No idea what she had before she went to rescue. Was just told that Persian food didn't suit her..We are currently on Sainsbury's brand wheat free food. And she's a completely different cat. She's been sick once in 3 weeks instead of every day. I'm now getting the full force of her personality!!

Chicken is the number food allergen in cats. An exclusion diet should be a protein and carbohydrate source that is new to the cat venison and potato can be a good combination.
For taurine you need to be feeding some liver from the protein source, but not too much as it can cause hypervitaminosis D.
There are excellent commercial exclusion diets that are balanced and ensure the cat is getting the right amino acids.
However, if you have not had testing done the single biggest allergen is Cats is house dust mites so it could be worth considering dust mite control.

ImNotKitten · 22/01/2019 01:33

I’d really recommend an allergy blood test. Lone is spot on and my cat showed strong allergies to chicken to dust mites, amongst other thing. Now I know exactly which foods won’t flare his allergies up and can take steps to minimise the dust mites. I’d be worried about regular steroids affecting his heart.
