So last night he came sat on the sofa beside me, was purring and burying he's head in my arm for me to stroke him,so I did and he was fine then all of a sudden he bit into my thumb and wouldn't let go 😳 it bloody hurt and left a mark. What was that all about! He's never bitten before

Sounds like a love bite to me. If it’s any consolation it means that he adores you!

Beamur · 17/01/2019 11:05

If it didn't break the skin he wasn't trying to hurt you.
My cats sometimes'bite' me but never hurt me, usually done whilst purring. I think it is affectionate.
One of mine accidentally bit me once when I was offering a treat and he mistook my finger tip for the treat. Teeth sank into my flesh like butter. Made me realise how much they do inhibit biting!

I'd didn't break the skin no but it bloody well hurt lol, he's never done that before and it shocked me!
He's one next month so wondering if it could be he's age?

If it happens again, consider what you were doing just before he bit. It sounds like he's got over stimulated. My cats will get a sharp 'no' and put down for nonsense! Plus one of mine has really obvious body language, so if she's getting antsy I move my hands away until she's calmer.

@Beamur I will do from now on thank you

might be a little hurt or sensitive on a area you stroked? mine would give a nip if she's had a little scratch or as above over stimulated

Beamur · 17/01/2019 15:12

Good point - check also for the possibility of an unseen injury.

CandidCat · 17/01/2019 15:21

Mine will bite if they get overexcited during petting/stroking, usually the purring gets louder and faster and then suddenly jaws are closing over my hand. Not hard enough to hurt though. If it wasn't an affectionate bite, could he been hurt, perhaps have a bruise or sensitive sore patch? I'd check him over, run your hands over him and see if he reacts to any particular area.

I never considered that 🤔 I'll give him a check over when he's back from he's travels, thanks guys

My cheddar is the most docile and affectionate cat ever. I made the mistake of letting her lick my finger and she mistook it for a bone and chewed it very hard. She left a hole in my finger!

My boy cat (same age as yours) does this if he gets over stimulated during petting, I also give him a no and put him off if it's hard, he's also a "love biter" so a gentle nibble quite often.
Mind you he also regularly nibbles my toe to inform me his bowl isn't filled to the required level so I suppose he just hasn't trained me well enough yet.
My lovely lady on the other hand never bites nor did her predecessor
