Cat pissing on the carpet

I have 2 kittens 6 months old (neutered), one of whom persistently pisses on the carpet in front of the litter tray 😫

I washed it as best I could with biological liquid then with the vax carpet washer and he just does it again. If I put a towel down he just pisses on that. If I move the litter tray, he just pisses a bit further up. He never goes anywhere else just in this area. He isn't spraying, but a small circular widdle! I never catch them either so therefore not 100% certain which one it is and cannot tell them off. They both use the litter tray to poo and its changed regularly.

Does anyone have any tips or advice? TIA

You can get a specific cleaner from pet shops that has an enzyme in it which breaks down the protein in the urine and so eliminates the smell. Cats tend to go back to the same spot to wee because they can smell where they've been before, so if you get rid of the smell it can help. It's called Simple Solution.

Also, my vet has advised at least one litter tray per cat as they prefer not to share, and ideally one more tray than the number of cats, so in your case three trays.

Provide a different type of cat litter. It sounds like your kitten wants to be clean and go in the right area, but something about the box is unappetizing. The feel of the litter can be it.

You should take him to the vet also as this is often a sign of illness.

I'd always vet if the kitties pee outside the box just in case it's a UTI which are often fatal to cats if left untreated.

Also add another tray with different litter. If you can't get hold of Simple Solution today try cleaning the pissy area with a solution of bio washing powder. It works in a similar way.

Thanks some good suggestions. I'll get the vet to give them the once over too (not sure which one it is)

Have you got enough trays? The advice is one per cat plus a spare. So you would need three.

AlanaMay · 01/01/2019 20:18

More trays would be my first thought. One for each cat and a spare. In different locations too, not all lined up.
Some cats won't poo where they've wee'd or vice versa.

PottyPotterer · 01/01/2019 20:30

Yep, you need more trays. Get them checked out for uti's but likelihood is something environmental. 2 cats compete for resources so make sure there's plenty and look out for subtle signs of bullying, another common cause. Oh and try a feliway friends diffuser.

I had 2 kittens, but my boy cat would always summon up a wee for every tray as soon as you put down clean litter. My female kitten obviously didn't like this, so took to piddling in the hall. We only got a resolution to this once they started toileting outside.

Ilovecrumpets · 01/01/2019 21:32

@Beamur this is the exact problem I have atm. 2 boy kittens. Now have 6 trays down! Kitten 2 goes and pees in every bloomin tray. Kitten 1 won’t wee in dirty trays ( doesn’t even like his own wee being there) so wees in the hall. Kitten 2 also digs like crazy so ensures his wee is liberally spread round the litter box.

At least gives me hope it might resolve when they go outside!

Grin sounds very similar! My boy cat had to annoint every tray. He's the same in the garden now too, if you dig any soil over he appears as if by magic and pees. He nearly got squashed by my husband trying to put a butler's sink into the garden (pond related) and he dived into the hole for a quick wee.
Girl cat never wees in the house now.
