Grain free or high protein content?

Which is more important? Grain free or a good protein content? Our vet said that grain free is fine but that very very few cats are truly sensitive to grains, and that protein content/ meat content is the thing to look for.

I've been looking at foods since we got our kittens last month and I'm just getting more and more confused! We've settled on a good quality dry food, 80% meat content, 37% protein.... but now need to find a good quality wet food too. (I'd be grateful for any recommendations!)

High protein means more likely to be grain free anyway. Look at zooplus for good wet foods. Pets at home is also more likely to offer higher protein/ grain free wet foods than the supermarket

What brand is the dry food? Do they do wet food too?

theSnuffster · 29/12/2018 16:44

It's applaws- from what I can see, their wet foods are complimentary rather than a complete food.

Most high protein foods tend to be grain free as a pp says.

ZooPlus is great for the European brands that tend to be better. Animonda Carny for example is great for kittens and it's complete.

Yes animonda carny is one that stood out actually, it seems to be much better value than some other brands yet still good quality.

Applaws is an excellent dry food. Their wet food, annoyingly, isn’t complete so is pretty pointless - you might as well give your cat a bit of tuna as a treat (which is much cheaper!). Nature’s menu, Natural Instinct, Lily’s kitchen, animonda are all good wet food brands. Anything grain free tends to be good quality. Just check it’s complete as complimentary foods don’t have taurine added, which is essential for cats.

Thanks @Hungrypuffin

They do both love a little treat of tuna/ beef/ turkey/ chicken. I joked to my OH that some tins of tuna and some chicken breasts would last ages and work out much cheaper than some of the cat foods on the market!

I'm going to order some animonda I think as we need more applaws soon, the two together will mean i'd get free delivery (really dislike paying delivery charges 😂)

There’s also one on zooplus called Mac’s which is v good.

My cats eat a grain free biscuit which has all the vitamins and minerals, I also feed them the applaws shredded chicken as a wet feed.
