FOPS

Hello

Just wondering if there are any vets around or anyone with experience of FOPs.

I’m hoping I’m just being paranoid but I’m really concerned about my little Burmese boy. He was neutered at the vets today and was quite stressed by the experience. Since his return he has been constantly pawing at his face, opening his mouth wide and sticking his tongue out. I rang the vets who said he had been doing it there and not to worry as he is just teething.

It seems a really extreme reaction to teething to me and he wasn’t showing any signs at all this morning. Of course I googled it and came across FOPs. I’m really worried now given he is a Burmese. I posted this morning about how important he is to us as a family as he has really helped my DS who Ian struggling atm.

I will obviously take him to the vets tomorrow if it continues. Just wondered though if kittens do excessively claw at their faces during teething? Or if it is FOOd is that usually manageable?

So glad to hear he's better this morning. I know stress over my animals always makes me immediately fear the worst

missmouse101 · 29/12/2018 10:29

So happy for you! He's absolutely beautiful and wonderful to hear all is well.

Ilovecrumpets · 29/12/2018 10:49

Thanks Smile. He is just such a special little kitten ( I know they all are of course Wink) with a massive personality. He has helped my eldest DS so much and brings so much to our household.

very sensible around the animals

Says the woman who started the first kitten on poached fish? 😸

Glad to hear he’s recovering.

Wolfiefan · 29/12/2018 14:33

Don’t be daft! You weren’t ridiculous at all. (Says the woman who assumes any mark on her dog is Alabama rot and any inappetance is pneumonia. Blush)
You are unreasonable though for having a Siamese and a Burmese and not inviting me round. Grin I grew up with one and have always wanted the other!

Ilovecrumpets · 29/12/2018 14:41

Ha ha - @Fluffycloudland77 that’s very true Blush. They are actually having some as a treat today.

*@Wolfiefan** I’ve always loved wolfhounds so am very jealous of your big girlSmile. Tbh I do feel a bit guilty about the cats and not getting rescues which I always had in the past. The Siamese was my treat to myself and then the little Burmese was a gift from a breeder friend who knew I was looking and thought she had the perfect kitten for my family. The Siamese has turned out to be not your typical Siamese at all - he is very quiet, gentle and a bit shy.

Give it time. The Siamese will be lulling you into a false sense of security.
We have always had rescued cats and I feel a little guilty about buying a pup (albeit from a good breeder). My son and I volunteer at a rescue though.

Ilovecrumpets · 29/12/2018 15:29

@Wolfiefan probably very true about the Siamese. He is still demanding just quietly so. He is a funny thing, likes to stand ‘guard’ on all of us and even though he runs away from them cries in my DC rooms when they go to stay at their dads!

Getting a non rescue cat somehow seems worse than a dog, I don’t know why. I also volunteer at a rescue so hope I’m redressing the balance a little. I’ve just always, always wanted a Siamese ( although now would find it difficult not to have a BurmeseWink)

Many people don’t volunteer or give to charity.
Many people impulse buy online.
Many people give up their pets without any really compelling reason.
Don’t feel guilty. (Except for not sharing with me! Wink)

Hi there , I’ve just found this thread and it’s exactly what has happened to me with my Burmese Kitten he was neutered on Wednesday and exactly same thing happened to him and next day and today he’s fine .. How is your cat now ?? The vet has worried me and he is back to normal now

Ilovecrumpets · 02/12/2023 09:37

Hello - so he was fine, but he does this whenever he is injured so it’s definitely his pain response. Vet has just said to stay on top of dental health.

He is the most bonkers cat I’ve ever owned - always getting into scrapes, locked in people's houses ( because he’s so cuddly all the neighbours let him in 🙄). He’s been amazing for the kids though, like a living cuddly toy! All he wants is attention.

He’s cost me a lot in vet’s fees as even though he’s tiny he takes on all the huge cats!

Oh amazing bless you for responding as I know it’s an old thread !! I suspect Bilbo could be the same so will be careful in future especially with anything dental !!
And wonderful he’s such a lovely cat and with your kiddies !! He loves our grandchildren…Bilbo ( 5 months ) has not been allowed out as yet , can you remember how old yours was when you first let him ?? My other 2 cats were Tonkinese and I let them out as well .. Frodo the male sounds like your boy !!! Would you still advise letting a Burmese out ?? I am pretty sure I am going to but have my worries about him wandering too far !!

Ilovecrumpets · 02/12/2023 13:19

Letting out is tricky. I’ve now had to get him one of those tracking collars as he does go missing as is so friendly. But he loves going out and if I try to keep him in yowls and yowls. I tend to get him in at about 4 at the moment. It is a hard decision though!
