Changing pet insurance

None of my cats medical conditions are covered by her current insurer and they've also hiked the price from £26 per month to £39. I had a wee look online and found a company who can cover her with life time cover (which she doesnt currently have) for £15 per month which gives her £2000 of treatment a year. Or £20 per month for £4000 of treatment a year. Shes nearly 18 so really im not sure id put her through lots of medical treatment if she became unwell as i think it would be too much for her. So should i got for the £2000 of treatment a year or £4000?

You will not find any company to offer cover for an 18 year old cat that would cover her pre-existing conditions. The £15/£20 monthly fee is likely to be for younger healthy cats anyway and once you tell them the full details, you will be quoted a lot more.

That quote is using her age. Im not expecting any new company to cover her pre existing conditions but because her current insurers now also dont cover her existing conditions (basically she was allowed 1 year of treatment or £3k of treatment what ever came 1st and when that was up they wouldnt pay out anymore) so my thinking is to change cover to get soemthing cheaper per month

That's why it's best to take out a lifetime policy rather than one that only covers 1 year

Yes i was naive when it came to insurance.

I don't think you will get cover now sadly. I'm glad I got lifetime cover with mine as my elderly cats have racked up around £6000 each for various conditions of old age.
But to be honest there really isn't that much that can be done when an elderly cat gets sick. My last one had cardiomyopathy and I really feel I should have had him PTS rather than put him through all the treatment he did have which in the end was pointless as he died anyway.
Same with another cats kidney disease, died despite treatment.

I agree. If she gets really ill then i dont think id proceed with treatment as i dont think itd be fair. The company is giving me a quote and knows her age. I just dont know whats best?

Tbh if you know you wouldn’t treat and you’re getting a bad deal now, I’d cancel the insurance. 18 is a very respectable age for a cat.

Plump82 · 29/12/2018 05:35

Hungrypuffin youve read my mind!! I decided to do that today. Im paying £50 a month on medication that her insurance doesnt cover so i might as well use what i pay for her current insurance towards the medication.

@Plump82 which company is that? We're just getting quotes for our two moggies (8 months)

Plump82 · 29/12/2018 19:13

@SciFiScream We're currently with Tesco and the new quote was with AnimalFriends
