Kittens keep weeing on our beds.

Help! We have 2 kittens ( brother and sister) who are nearly 6 months old. They have been neutered recently. But they ( both of them) insist on weeing on our beds, the little buggers. They have a litter tray that they have access to but hardly use as they have access to outside most of the time. It seems to happen when it's raining heavily Hmm

It's getting ridiculous; nearly every day if we forget to close the bedroom doors. We are a household with two young children and 3 dogs ( one is a 4 month old puppy) in case that's relevant.

I had to throw my very expensive king size duck down duvet out today. We can't go on like this. Any ideas?

As frustrating as it is you have to think like a cat.

They’ve got themselves into a nice little habit using your bed as a litter tray so you need to retrain them to use their litter tray.

I would keep them confined to one room and place two litter trays in there, along with their food, bed and water.

Test out different litters too as so times it’s the litter they don’t like.

Other times it’s the location of the litter trays or the tray itself.

You have to try to get to the bottom of it and retrain them to use the trays.

You cannot let them have the run of the house whilst they are in the habit of using your bed.

Of course they won’t go outside to do their business if its raining and there’s a comfy, warm, soft litter tray (bed) in your bedroom. Think like a cat 😁

At this time of year I have to be sneaky. In the morning when cat wants breakfast. I shut the kitchen door, then open back door and chase her out. Ditto early evening. If I forget she uses the bath mat. We do not use litter trays.

Beaverhausen · 17/12/2018 21:43

These are kittens she can't exactly scooch them out the back door.
@ginandsonicboom try different types of litter, I use the woodchip which works great. Also might be an idea to check with vet that there are no underlying problems.

It might be an idea to keep them out of your bedroom until they learn to use their litter tray properly.

Have a look at the cats protection website they will have all the information you might need on there.

Which litter do you use?.

Andallwaswell · 17/12/2018 21:45

Could you try putting something they don’t like over your bed, like a plastic sheet that will rustle when they jump on it? This will discourage them from your bed. I’d also recommend chopping up a lemon and putting a piece in all the corners of your house to stop them going there (don’t know why that works but always has when we have had kittens!). Little rascals!

ginandsonicboom · 17/12/2018 21:45

Thanks both, I will try to retrain them by keeping them in one room, but it's a bit tricky with young children and 3 dogs ( and boy, are they fast!) I'm new to cat ownership, but thought cats were supposed to be clean?
I'm worried they're unhappy kitties in our hectic house ( wouldn't blame them, I am Wink).

We use Catsan. Will try something else. Would I be better off having 2 trays instead of them having to share?
I've just had a thought too; the bloody puppy did a wee on the litter tray last week, this may have put them off using it?

If a cat has inappropriate elimination it’s always our fault. Their trying to tell you somethings wrong.

You might have hit the nail on the head that it’s too busy in your house for them.

They’ll know the dogs are another apex predator.

italiancortado · 17/12/2018 21:49

You should actually have 3 litter trays for 2 cats.

wibblywobblyfish · 17/12/2018 21:50

I had cats that would do this periodically and it drove me insane. I was told that cats like to pee on beds as they are soft, like grass. It would start if we changed anything in the house, we had a new kitchen put in and it triggered a phase off. A feliway plug in helped as well as changing the cat litter daily. Extra litter trays around too. We only have one cat now and since he's been on his own it hasn't happened.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/12/2018 21:51

Catsan is quite big and rough on young paws. A fine grain ultra clumping is needed.

The correct ratio for trays is one per cat, and a spare. So you’ll need three.

Beaverhausen · 18/12/2018 06:46

Op the kittens will be fine they just need teaching. Cats are very clean and not much hassle than feeding and such characters.

Have a look at zooplus they have an extensive range of litter and lots of other goodies for all your pets at a very good price.

thecatneuterer · 18/12/2018 16:03

If they usually go out to toilet and only piss on the bed when it's raining, then it would seem that there is something wrong with the litter tray, otherwise that would be the default place to use if they didn't fancy going out.

So I would try a couple of other trays in different positions/rooms and with different litter and yes, keep them out of bedrooms for now.
