Kittens and Christmas tree

I'm partway through putting up our tree and I'm kidding myself aren't I? I can not possibly have the tree with curtain climbing kittens in the house. I'm going to have to limit myself to a 3ft sapling on top of a cupboard.

Where are all my lights and decorations going to go??

I have high hopes that they will grow into well behaved tree ignoring cats like some here and ignore the others but they are only 4 months or so now so still kitten brained. I don't trust them one iota. :)

I had one the first year I had a young cat (20 years ago). That was the last time for me!

SoupDragon · 15/12/2018 15:09

The tree-on-a-bare-trunk survived the night so I have a tiny hope that I might get away with it. It has nothing sparkly on it though...

I wa sat on my sofa last night minding my own business (MNing) when I head a sound. Right behind me was this... the struggle to get him back out again was most undignified

@Kenworthington surely you must ask yourself why get him out. Clearly that is the entirely reasonable and natural place for him to be.

SoupDragon · 18/12/2018 12:54

Would this be a workable option? Grin

Tintycat just laid there on the warm radiator and let DD decorate him.

I think it might require protective gauntlets and possibly duck tape.

Tinty · 18/12/2018 13:45

Good solution, but how long before they work out how to jump from the sofa into the tree? Grin

SoupDragon · 18/12/2018 13:47

I moved it far enough away that they have to think twice about it. I assessed their abilities carefully 😂 After the photo was taken, I removed the bottom row of branches as it was too close to being reachable.

They are alone for a day over Christmas so I suspect they are just biding their time!

Oh my god, my 6 month old kitten has me demented with the tree. I keep threatening to take it back down. The novelty has not worn off and he was neutered 2 weeks ago and I laugh now thinking how we naively assumed he would calm down after! He climbs the branches and sits on his perch watching while I attempt to reach him or poke a stick at him to get him to move. He is adorable though, and a big ball of squishy cuddles. Still, he has been relegated to our room or the upstairs and hall because we cant close off the sitting room as its open plan to the kitchen and dining room. I feel bad he has been banished, but then I let him back in and he is back to staring at me from inside the tree while i try get him to move

Forget the tree SoupDragon, I want your fireplace Smile

How old are your lovely babies? My two are eight months and I thought a tree was out of the question. We have a fake one which I put up for a couple of days. As I thought, Boris ignored and Ollie played with branches, but it's still standing. It now has two pieces of tinsel (lower one keeps getting rearranged by Ollie, but still there) and I've put some wooden decorations on we have - that way when Ollie pulls them off the tree, there's no chance of shattering and cut paws. As Ollie has pulled the decorations off, I've put them back on but higher. It's a bit of an odd tree with approx six decorations hanging on the lower level and 20 odd things higher up. We do have lights on there, Ollie tried chewing the cable the first night but has ignored it since. Give it ago!!

Naughty kitten here. He's 7 months and wouldn't leave it alone, we ended up taking everything off and putting back the branches he has bent (Artificial tree) and got it just right. We've had to use a water spray to keep him away since, I never wanted to do it but we had no choice before he destroyed an expensive tree. Luckily it's only taken a few sprays before he got the message.

My kitten is 6 months old and he has let me down by not once trying to climb the tree. He plays with the baubles at the bottom occasionally but that's it ! He is a little hurricane at times so he has really surprised me.

sweetkitty · 19/12/2018 23:53

My two 7 month old kittens in the tree that had been up 3 minutes. Tree is now locked away in another room Confused

My two are being snipped tomorrow - hopefully that will calm them down for a couple of days...

Theonewiththecat · 20/12/2018 20:16

I have spent the last 2 weeks saying things like 'cats don't belong in the Christmas tree' and 'cat!! Stop eating my tree'

Here he is in action 😛😂

H1 - my kittens were snipped two months ago, did nothing to calm them down. Today’s fun was jumping on top of the fridge and stealing our houseguests dogs food despite having bowls of expensive cat food permantely full. Running sboutvwoth baubles from the DCs little Christmas trees in their mouths and staring at the houseguests guinea pigs.
