Training cat....

Is there any way to train a cat NOT to go on counter tops?

Possibly to train them not to go up there whilst you are watching.... Otherwise invest in cleaning spray and wipe them down well.

puddlesplashing · 13/12/2018 18:32

How would I train it though ?

Water pistol, Pet Behave Spray (Amazon) but mostly the training will be yours - you have to pretend that you've done a marvellous job teaching them never to jump up when in reality you've just taught them not to do it in front of you.

puddlesplashing · 13/12/2018 18:42

Haha yeah, I guess that she will do it when I'm not there. As long as I don't see and I bleach everything before I cook I'm happy.

No.

puddlesplashing · 13/12/2018 19:12

Fluffy is that through experience ? I was hoping for a miracle

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/12/2018 19:26

Yes. The cat can jump up more times than you can say “down”.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/12/2018 19:26

Get a Persian. They can't jump that high. Otherwise you've got no chance!

puddlesplashing · 13/12/2018 20:07

Oh dear maybe re home time Shock

My rescue cat did this all the time when we first got him. I put some coppers in an empty coke can and rattled them whenever he jumped on the counter. He didn’t like the noise so jumped down. I had to do this for about a week but he stopped doing it, well at least when I’m there! What he does in the dead of night is another matter.....

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/12/2018 20:35

But who will have you Puddle?

puddlesplashing · 13/12/2018 20:36

@Melfish I will try that. I could never re home her. We love her

OP posts:
puddlesplashing · 13/12/2018 20:36

Is that to do with them being scared of snakes?

OP posts:
StuntNun · 16/12/2018 07:56

I trained my two my saying No to them and taking them down again whenever they jumped up but my MIL swears by kitchen foil laid along the worktops. Apparently it freaks them out when they land on it and they soon stop jumping up at all.

Ski37 · 16/12/2018 20:50

My cat NEVER goes on the counters when I am home - he used to try but got a stern ‘no’ and was removed each time and eventually gave up (or so I thought😂) ..... after a particulary rainy day I once came home to little muddy pawprints absolutely everywhere - busted! I just wipe everything down now before I prepare food 😂

PeridotCricket · 16/12/2018 20:59

Ours have rarely done it (while we’re watching). Just said no firmly when kittens. Never gave them any attention or praise if they did. One cat does maybe twice a year for attention. Just gently push him off.

We might have been lucky. No idea what they do when we aren’t at home, tapdance on them probably.

puddlesplashing · 17/12/2018 14:23

@Ski37 Lol that's hillarious. They are clever wee things!
