Indoor cat has diarrhoea. Any advice?

Our cat is just over 6 years old and has been an indoor cat ever since we adopted her as a stray,at about 4 months.
The day before yesterday (Monday) she had quite bad diarrhoea 4 times in the space of 4 hours. This is very unusual for her,she normally poos,on average, once every 24 hours, and it is usually pretty firm, very rarely loose in consistency. We kept her off wet food for 24 hours (despite her pestering) and just gave her dried food. She had another small amount of diarrhoea on Monday afternoon, about 6 hours after the first bout, then no more between then and late Tuesday evening.
Just after I'd gone to bed last night (Tuesday) she left my bedroom and went into the hallway. After about 5 minutes,I went to see what she was up to and discovered 2 small puddles of what I am pretty sure was vomit. It looked exactly like what she'd eaten 2 hours earlier, and was a totally different colour to the diarrhoea. It didn't smell awful like the diarrhoea did either. I also discovered that she'd been in the litter tray and had a small amount of diarrhoea again. I removed the wet food she had left overnight, then this morning at 10.30am I gave her half a small tin of Gourmet cat food, which she polished off. Then 15 minutes later, she had diarrhoea again. I am at a loss as to what is causing this.
There has been no change in her diet, and she has not been outside to have access to any toxic substance. Anyone else had experience of unexplained diarrhoea in a cat? And how long should I just keep an eye on it for before taking her to the vet? She seems normal within herself, is pestering for food as usual, is being affectionate, and charging around the flat as she normally does.

It does happen and I have no idea why. The first thing to do is to feed only bland food - typically boiled chicken and rice and boiled/steamed (I do it in the microwave) white fish (you can get bags of cheap 'unnamed' fish in the freezer sections of supermarkets).

Feed nothing but this (and dry food is normally bad if not worse than wet food) for around 48 hours. As long as she seems fine in herself and is still eating and alert then I would go down this route first.

You should also give her a proper wormer (Drontal/Milbemax). If she deteriorates in herself or stops eating altogether or if all this makes no difference then I would see a vet.

You could always call your vet anyway and ask for advice.

Thank you thecatneuterer. She had one episode of diarrhoea yesterday early evening, and since then we've given her only a bit of white chicken meat to eat. Thankfully, there has been no more diarrhoea or sickness. She seems OK in herself, just slightly more lethargic than normal, which is possibly due to the lack of food. But apart from that, she seems fine. Am going to keep her off normal food until tomorrow morning and take it from there.
