We had a cat when I was a teen but I'm not clued up on modern cat care. I've finally persuaded DH that cat we have chosen is preferable to rodents in the cellar we haven't...
What do I need/need to know? I'm a volunteer cat cuddler already and we definitely want an adult cat that likes younger children.

More basic questions!
We've got her to the vet! Finally!

She clearly thinks our food supplies are inadequate. She's got into a paper bag of dried food, tried a bag of flour, and grabbed a ham that I'd covered (we are learning!).
We feed her 1 pouch (or 1/5 can) and about 1-2 tbsp in the afternoon, and 1/4 cup dried food in the morning. She's not big. Is that enough? Or are we starving her?

She has popped out by accident (we had someone doing the garden) - she's been here two weeks and she came straight back in so I think she knows where she lives!

Do we need to do anything with her claws?
As she's black and white and her tummy is white, it's a bit mucky. I assume generally cats are self cleaning and we don't need to do anything?

That doesn’t sound like a lot of food to me but cats do have a range of appetites. I usually feed wet food twice a day and have dry out all the time. Some cats are incorrigible food thieves even when well fed.
Claws and grubby tummy should take care of themselves, if she has a scratching post, or a handy piece of expensive soft furnishing. You may find as she gets more settled that her standard of grooming gets better.

Hmm I was basing it on the Google Vet. She eats all her dried food in the morning as soon as it goes out. Maybe if we give a bit more then it would help.

She may also still be building up from feeding her kittens, how long ago did they leave her? I find that foster cats eat a lot when they first come (if they aren't in hiding) and then settle down once they are sure that the food will keep coming.

Eatmycheese · 11/01/2019 22:57

@chemenger yes I agree with the food.
Our three (mostly indoor) cats have scratch posts and three expensive sofas grown but still need their claws clipping which I do.

@drspouse she's a very sweet little girl.

One kitten was maybe 10 weeks? Bit older? But he was with her in foster care so I suppose he may have still been feeding? I know nothing!
We'll increase her dried food a bit.

Sorry there were 2 kittens but the other had already gone to a home a week or so before In Charge Cat came to us.
