Cat yelping when peeing :( any advice?

My 11yo female cat just went to use her tray for a wee and let out 2 "yelps" which were quite long and high pitched.

She was fine after and is totally fine within herself. Any one know what this could be?

Thanks.

Cystitis. Cats are really prone. You will need to take her to the vet for a course of antibiotics.

Vets ASAP, she's in pain. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

LylaBee · 04/12/2018 18:20

Oh no :( are there any other symptoms I should be looking out for?

Do you think I should ring the emergency vet or wait till tomorrow? (Sorry, she's never had anything like this before!)

Please take her to emergency vet today if possible. Cystitis or UTI are possibilities and are best caught early. Cats are very stoic and will do their very best to not show pain so when does cry, that's your alarm call.
I'm so glad you caught this now. Hope all goes well at the vets and your kitty quickly gets back to her normal self.

I forgot, you asked about symptoms. If you notice her constantly trying to clean herself "down there", that can be a sign she's got a urinary tract problem.
Blood in her urine would be another sign. You may or may or not see these symptoms, the yelping is enough to be concerned.

Vet immediately. She’s in pain. Probably cystitis as others have said.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/12/2018 18:53

Most likely a UTI. Call ooh vets and see if they feel she can wait. Animals are pretty stoic so if she is vocalising she is ina lot of pain

LylaBee · 04/12/2018 19:02

OOH vet has said she can wait

She's now running around and totally her normal self. She has none of the other symptoms. I'm thinking it could be something else? Maybe she stood on a sharp piece of litter? Aghhh.

Just be aware that she may start peeing other places, if she associates her litter tray with pain.

LEMtheoriginal · 04/12/2018 19:04

Get a sample and pop it along to your vet for testing. Those symptoms shouldn't be ignored.

PlateOfBiscuits · 04/12/2018 19:07

Well done for calling the OOH vet. Your regular vet will probably give you some special cat litter and ask you to drop a urine sample in to them.

LylaBee · 04/12/2018 19:15

Thanks everyone. I'm going to take her in tomorrow. It's horrible not knowing what's wrong

You can get a urine sample by buying some special litter that doesn't absorb because it's basically just clean plastic beads. It's called KatKor.

95% of cystitis in cats is not a UTI. In Male cats the most common cause is crystals and in female cats it is idiopathic cystitis in which stress is a major factor.
In Male cats the signs are a big emergency in female cats much less so.
