Running out for options for DCat, so sad.

My little cat is only 4, I've had him a year from a rescue centre. Last weekend, he suddenly went downhill and was admitted to vets with urinary blockage. It was cleared and he came home Monday night, but he couldn't wee so I took him back in Tuesday. He's been at the vets since. He's been catheterised twice under general anaesthetic, is on masses of painkillers and relaxants but they've just called me to say that as soon as they remove the catheter he spasms up again and can't wee. They found a UTI which they treated but it hasn't improved the problem. If he doesn't wee by this afternoon, I need to decide whether I want him catheterised for a third time, or should I decide to let him go. I am just so sad - he is so lovely. He is so clean and outdoorsy and so young, I need him to have a proper quality of life. Just that really because you will understand.

So sorry to hear about your beloved little cat. I remembering reading on here two bits of advice which helped at the time. Sometimes when we take away their pain we are putting it on to oneself, so in that sense it really is a selfless act, not matter how much it hurts us at the time, sadly.
Also if there is absolutely nothing than can be done for your cat, perhaps try one last time with the catheter ? It's better if they are PTS a day too early rather than a week too late, if they are in a bad way.
I hope things work out for your puss. Sending virtual hugs X
And of course everyone on here will understand, that's what we're here for.

Is it worth getting a second opinion. Just so you know that you've done everything you possibly can.

hen10 · 01/12/2018 11:40

Thank you for your kind words. He's with a chain practice so over the last 7 days he's seen quite a few vets. I will visit this afternoon and see what they say.

You can have a perineal ureathrosotomu performed - e.g. have the penis removed as they normally block at the tip where it gets very narrow.

@Toddlerteaplease I agree a second opinion, might put your mind at rest OP and reassure you that you did your very best, but it was not to be. And give you some peace through the grieving process.

I know it's so hard to make that decision OP, particularly with a recused cat so young, sorry if I came across as a bit abrasive in my first post regarding PTS

To quote Wilde- Somethings are more precious because they don't last long.

And in those 4 years you have given him love and care, and are still caring for him. Whatever difficult decision you have to make. I wish you all the best and love.

Thank you, he was put to sleep this afternoon. We went over and over the options but it was the best thing for him and I don't have to worry about him being in pain any more.

Sad news. I’m sure the right thing. Picking the time is our ultimate privilege and responsibility as pet owners

Sorry to read this Flowers. So unfair when he was so young.
You did the right thing. Tried to get him good care & didn't let him suffer.

ps: can we be graced with a pic?

Toddlerteaplease · 01/12/2018 19:59

Very sad but I'm sure you made the right decision. It's awful now. But it will get better.
