I don't think I can handle it much longer :(

Came home from a really rough day at school to find my house stinking of cat pee yet again.
Litter trays upstairs and down..completely changed(and washed) every other day, poos scooped immediately.
But Portia literally walked into the wet room earlier and peed just 3 feet away from the tray. The landing upstairs has been scrubbed, sprayed, you name it, but every day, more pee. I will bleach the wet room at the weekend (was out tonight with DS2 and have a fucking Xmas do with DH's cycle group tomorrow..can you tell I'm enthusiastic)
Portia simply no longer cares.
I mostly feel it's time she went (she's nearly 19) but she is still eating (thin as a rail and no longer grooms so tatty) still purring and wandering around the house yowling so the kids are very anti having her pts. I feel awful about it as she is simply a demented old lady but the peeing is making me very miserable..I'm out at work, as are the kids and DH and tonight my house smells :( I work hard to keep it clean and tidy.
Sorry for the long rant, but has anyone any suggestions? (she pees a lot as she is in slow kidney failure..no magic solutions there)

I don't want to have her PTS while she still has some quality of life, I really don't, but I cant handle the pools of pee everywhere much longer. As it is we will have to re carpet the landing and stairs when she goes as it is ruined :( I have every pee remover on the market!

I'm sure you will make the right decision Still, and it is hard, but you are acting from compassion and it's often only with hindsight that we realise just how they've deteriorated.

I hope all goes well for you next week, whatever you decide. My adage is always better a day too soon than a day too late; but I hope you can all enjoy some precious time with her. Flowers

I am sorry you have to make this decision, please hold her while she is being pts, she wont feel as afraid, she will be comfortable that way
I have always held mine and cuddled them

It wasn't until I looked back at old photos that I realised how awful Fatty looked in her last month or so. I was shocked by how skinny she was when I collected her from the cattery after my holiday.
Please stay with her if you can. I took great comfort from cuddling Fatty, and it was very peaceful, and an end I'd wish for my self I think.

She's not a cuddly cat.. she's a feisty beastie so I would not hold her, but would scratch her ears and stroke her in her favourite spot... she's a funny little naughty tortie. :)

That sounds disgusting and I would want her PTS but I'd feel guilty. Btw bleach will encourage her to piss more.

OP your thread is so timely as I'm going through the same. I'm so sorry it's happening to you. Our little black girl is 18 with kidney disease and bowen's (like skin cancer). she goes in her tray but holds her bum outside and pisses on the floorConfused. She's now started peeing on our bed on top of leaving pus and blood from her lesions everywhere. We have throws covering everything and masses of laundry trying to keep up with the mess. On top of this she gets meds morning and night and I have to clean her tumour thing (which is huge) every other day. This entails cutting off dead skin and uncrusting her more minor lesions. She hates all of this but is such a lovely mild mannered wee sweetheart she never complains. Her favourite place is on someone's lap.
Reading all the replies to your dilemma made me see how much her quality of life has deteriorated, much like your tortie. But she still grooms herself and eats like a horse so isn't at death's door.
I am booking a vet appointment this week too. There's no good outcome either way though. Either we'll lose a beloved pet or have to continue with the soul destroying work of keeping her going.
My old girl is curled up on my lap while I'm writing this. It's so sad.
OP, best of luck at the vetFlowers

I really feel for everyone going through this; letting go is the hardest but often the kindest gift we can give to out much loved pets.

Many years ago we came across an old bedraggled tortie going through our bins, it was a soaking wet night and the poor cat was skin and bones. We are in a tiny village with no nearby houses and a few miles from the nearest town and she wasn't one of the neighbours cats.

We took her in and she curled up purring on my lap, the next day though it became apparent that she was very unwell, as the large litter tray was literally overflowing with urine. Luckily my neighbour is a vet, so I trundled off to see her, and she said that it was most likely kidney failure, that we could do tests to find out, but the reality would be that it was just prolonging her suffering.

I made the decision to pts the little cat I named Sally on the vets advice. I felt incredibly guilty, but thinking about how that poor little cat had probably been dumped because of the amount of urine she was producing broke my heart, and I was pleased that I was able to at least finally ease her suffering.

I've been involved with animals all my life and have rarely regretted pts too soon, but have definitely witnessed animals that have suffered because their owners are too guilt ridden to let go, but it is much easier to be objective when you aren't emotionally involved (if that's possible anyway!)
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that we are lucky that we can help our pets at the end rather than just leave them to suffer and slowly decline, and that can be a comfort knowing we have helped them. Flowers to all the poorly cats and their owners.
