Taking in a neglected cat - advice please!

This may end up long, but I really need some advice from fellow cat lovers.

I already have 2 kittens, brother and sister, approaching 8 months old now, both neutered, very happy, no problems. Over the past few weeks there has been increasing concern for a kitten walking around our community, near miss hits by cars, very slim and always begging for food and never being let into its home. There have been posts on our community page about this cat for weeks and although some people have said who owns the cat, until now unfortunately the owners have never answered the door. Today the kitten was found outside the local school, crying, and one of the ladies I know who takes her children there took the cat to the vets - to see if it was chipped and if we have all been assuming the wrong owner. The cat was not chipped, is a she, is less than a year old and is pregnant. The vet advised that if she has the babies in this weather outside they will not survive, especially if mother isn't getting enough food to sustain herself and therefore them. The vet advised the lady to find a home for the kitten if possible, or take her to a rescue - she asked me, if she can't contact the owners, could I take it in tonight and post my details through their door. She knocked and low and behold, they answered! However - they stated this is not the first time she has been pregnant, they dont want her inside ever, they don't want her kittens and they don't care about chipping or neutering her. We found the cat this evening, walking home, it had been raining and very windy, sheltered under a bush, absolutely soaking and crying. I got my cat carrier and I have brought the cat home where it gobbled lots of food and got warm next to the radiator. Yes, I've kind of 'stolen' a cat, but I couldn't bear to leave her out in the freezing cold.
My dilemma is introducing this kitten to my others. I brought her in today, took them upstairs first and just let her have a sniff around and she was quite happy. I let them in and she wasn't fussed by my male cat but was hissing at my female. Does anyone have any tips on introducing them? I'm not trying again until the morning as she is fast asleep now and settled, but I'm wondering if her being pregnant and protective of her babies (and having to be as she has essentially lived outside all her life!) will make it trickier. I can't bear to leave her outside all alone again.

Thank you if you have gotten this far!!

They couldn't get her to stay still enough to check her for anything really but I think if she had, between the vet originally saying she was pregnant and when I picked her up, she wouldnt have left the babies? When I found her she came straight too me, straight into the carrier, presumably to get out of the cold and wet. I think she would have been more defensive if she was with her kittens.

No she wouldn't. She would have come for food. That is a worry.

I would call her Pickle.

As for introductions, make sure your existing cats and her are kept separate but you can transfer their scents to each other. If you have a blanket in each of the separate rooms and then you can switch these round so the cats can get used to each others smell without conflict.

Thankyou for taking this poor girl in, please report the neighbours. Cruel horrible people.

Oops sorry, just seen you have settled on olive- lovely name.

So why have a cat?!! Idiots Angry
Glad she is settling down a little, so lucky she has found you but a pic is needed Wink fingers crossed they can have a better look at her when you take her again.

Are you able to check if she has milk OP? That would be a good indicator that she has left kittens somewhere, if they aren't currently feeding then you may actually see drops of milk.

MummytoCSJH · 02/12/2018 15:48

Hi all. We took her to the vets yesterday and they were able to do her first injection. She hasn't recently given birth and as far as the vet can tell she isn't pregnant - so good news on that front. She is getting spayed after her 2nd injection at the end of December, so it will be early January. Nothing to worry about in the mean time as both of mine are done and she won't be going outside! She is settling well, including attacking the Christmas decorations I put up this morning Grin It won't let me attach pictures on the mobile app for some reason, so I'll try on my laptop this evening.

Ahhh glad to hear there are no kittens to worry about.
Congratulations on your new family member Smile

You are a good person, OP. I wish you and your new feline overlord many happy years together.

fenneltea · 03/12/2018 15:03

Oh that will be much easier to deal with if there are no kttens; I'm so pleased you've taken her in OP, I hate to think of all the homeless cats with nobody to care for them, at least there's one less on the streets thanks to you. All of mine turned up like that too, it's so rewarding seeing them blossom.Smile

Vinorosso74 · 03/12/2018 15:28

That is good news there are no kittens to worry about.
Am pleased she has a proper home with you and will be taken care of properly now. I'm still angry about her previous "owners" on her behalf.

So glad OP that you have given poor kitty a happy loving home. Me and DH "stole" a cat years ago. He was so neglected, stick thin, running alive in fleas, lots of bald patches on him. Plus one of his front legs stuck out at a funny angle. Vet said it had been broken at some stage and just left!

Cat belonged to a neighbour of DH's parents and, like your new puss, was never allowed in. DH's parents were horrified that we stole him but we gave him a loving home for around 6 years and he become very loving. He was black and it was lovely to see him go from a skinny balding cat to a much healthier weight and gleaming coat.

We have had lots of rescue cats and always introduced them fairly slowly. The younger they are usually the quicker they accept each other. Some of ours got on really well with the others (even sleeping with them), others not so well but we never had any great fights or problems. Quite a lot of hissing at the start often though
