Extremely cuddly cat who won't go outside

I absolutely love my cat, he is the cuddliest loveliest little boy tabby who I genuinely feel we have the cutest bond.

However... he is sooooo needy! He's been like this ever since we got him back in the summer and at first I just thought he was nervous and we made him feel safe. We got him from RSPCA and they told me he was found abandoned and was about 2 years old. He was a skinny, shabby little fella when we got him, with colitis and it took me a while to find good food that suited him but after a few weeks his coat was shiny and his bowels much better Grin

Every day he has his breakfast then loves at least a good hours snuggling on me if he can. I work lots of nights/weekends and this means between me and OH there's often someone around in the house. If we're sat down he's on us, follows us from one room to the next, if we leave the room when he's eating and distracted he runs round meowing like a mad cat until he's found us again. If we let him he'd spend his whole life cuddled up in my arms like an actual baby, getting up just to eat because he loves his food.

I open the door for him a few times a day to see if he wants to go out but he very rarely does. He did a little bit in the summer in nice weather but now he sniffs the cold air and looks at me as if to say erm no not going out there thanks. On the rare occasion he does venture into the garden for a wander he generally is meowing at the door 5 mins later to come straight back in.

Anyone else got a very cuddly cat who seems scared of the outside? I don't mind him being an indoor cat but just worry he might get bored! He has lots of toys and we make a conscious effort to play with him. We make him run around after his mouse on a string so he at least gets some exercise because he's a lazy lump Blush

I do love him so much and love his cute little cuddles and kisses but also want him to have a fulfilling life Hmm I'm mad aren't I?

You are enslaved.
Accept your destiny.

DustyMaiden · 21/11/2018 15:07

Sounds like my DS. Turned out to be Aspergers.

Orangelover · 21/11/2018 15:08

I'm just going to have to accept my new cuddly life aren't I Grin

Goodness knows how he'll be when we go on holiday. Haven't had to cross that bridge yet Hmm

I'm failing to see the issue here! I have one cat who is constantly traipsing mud and leaves into the house and who will only sit in the same room as me if I pin him down bribe him with dreamies. And his sister who will walk out of a room if I walk into it, and flinch if I try to stroke her. I'm the only one with feeds them - but they love every one else in the house more than me.

POPholditdown · 21/11/2018 15:08

Ahh his life sounds very fulfilled!
Do you have any before/after pics? Would love to see them.

My male cat is similar, though he does like to go out. He needs to be on my lap several times a day, most importantly when I’m on the looHmm.

He’s also my little spoon in bed.

He was an abandoned stray too, and from day one he would come sit in my lap, drool on me for a bit, before going to sleep. This was his routine every night for ages.

POPholditdown · 21/11/2018 15:09

Oh my god look at him cuddled up, how lovely!

He looks like Grandpa Mason

usernametaken · 21/11/2018 15:10

We have one like this, before us he had spent his 8 years living outside, we rescued him and he immediately craved 8 years of cuddling. He now sleeps in my arms or in my pillow and has to be near us. We got him (and us) a kitten which he automatically became daddy to..something for him to snuggle and cuddle all day! He still likes to be with us, but the kitten really helped, especially if we were out for the day.

MrsSchadenfreude · 21/11/2018 15:10

I think I have your cat’s hairier twin. We have to pick him up and take him to bed with us when we go, because if we leave him asleep on the sofa and he wakes up, he stands in the hall and shouts until someone goes and gets him.

I sleep on my front and he sleeps on my back with his paws around me.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 21/11/2018 15:12

You are blessed with a house cat.

No wondering where he is, no calling him in at night when you just want to go to bed and no Door Game.

He has decided that you are his proxy for the outside world and you will bring the world to him.

You are his world.

Bow down to your cat.

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 21/11/2018 15:15

Awww.

sunshineandshowers21 · 21/11/2018 15:15

my cat is exactly the same! she will happily lay on me all day. she normally lies on my chest with her head buried into my armpit but now i have a new baby she instead lies on the back of the couch and rests her head on my shoulder instead. she also sits on the edge of the bath whilst i’m in it! we have an enclosed cat litter tray so she barely leaves the house. my kids play with her for a bit in the morning and at night so that she has a little exercise but other than that she’s asleep on me or asleep in bed with the dog! it makes me feel better that she’s essentially a house cat because there have been a lot of missing cats around here lately.

Paw waves from my tabby boy!

Awww that’s ok then. I wondered if I was doing something wrong as I’d never met a cat like him. Never had one before but my auntie has a cat who whinges to go out every night and OHs mum and dad have always had cats and they insist that their cat goes out although he seems happy with that. I was panicking that I’d not introduced him properly to the outside world Hmm Saying that out loud has just made me realise how insane I am when it comes to my little furry Grin

@POPholditdown yes I’ve got a pic of him when we first got him compared with now. Poor little lad had ear mites hence he was all greasy with the ear drops. Second photo is him in his Halloween bow tie the other week Blush

Sounds like a lovely cat. If he's happy being like that, ma the most of it!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/11/2018 15:43

He's so gorgeous!

RangeRider · 21/11/2018 15:49

Eldest DCat is like that. Youngest is the one who refuses to come in unless he wants, won't sit on my lap or in my arms, wanders off for hours in the good weather, Mr Independent. Have to admit that I prefer the staying close to home, not wanting to go further than the garden outlook - less stress for me!

theworldistoosmall · 21/11/2018 15:50

Some like home comforts. I have two that would rather stay inside than venture outside. Although one did try it for a bit in the Summer, but after trying to get comfortable outside decided nope, he prefers the softness of his bed, humans bed or any chair he decides he owns.

RangeRider · 21/11/2018 15:53

That Grandpa Mason video - awwwwwwwww! That is so gorgeous Grin

BoglingToAswad · 21/11/2018 15:56

If you need a rest I volunteer to come and cuddle the cat Smile

POPholditdown · 21/11/2018 17:21

What an amazing difference, I love the pic of him in the bow❤️

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/11/2018 18:03

My Bengal likes to be held like that. He sounds a very happy cat who doesn’t want to be abandoned again so he’s making sure he knows where you are at all times.

Sarcelle · 21/11/2018 18:09

I think he is absolutely gorgeous.

WeareStardustWeareGolden · 21/11/2018 18:19

I have this too Op but in doggie form. Luckily she's a tiny little thing and we have had her since she was eight months old. Her mum died giving birth to her and she was hand reared. So many issues. She never leaves my side and refuses that go out other than into the garden for toilet quickly if I go with her and then back inside quickly. It's hard work sometimes but she is absolutely adorable and at nearly eight years old now I would not be without her. She's perfectly happy at never going out and the times that we have tried walking her becomes a massive ordeal. She is safe and happy in her comfort zone and has no need for the outside world. Everywhere I go she is my little shadow.
