B12 deficiency

Cat has been diagnosed with B12 deficiency. He starts a 6 week injection course on Monday.

I'm missing a 4 week holiday over Christmas to stick with him and hope it gets him back on track.
Anyone with any knowledge or experience as to how this may play out?
He's 10 years old. Never had any problems to date.
I'd be grateful for any first hand experience.

Amongst many other things our old girl had a deficiency and she had the weekly injections. The nurse said they can sting a bit but she was fine. From memory it did seem to brighten her up-she would have been about 13 at the time.

Thank you @vinorosso74.
That's hopeful news.

Was it just 6 weeks or did it go on longer?
If hes not absorbing sufficient nutrients, I'm guessing the 6 weeks to stabilise him?

And then what? Anyone been in similar position? He was a solidly built cat but within 12- 16 weeks he's boney.

I'm worried sick.

I think it was 6 weeks bit she did have some again at a later date (I can't remember how many tho).
I'm assuming they've done various blood tests to rule out other things?

NoCanoe · 18/11/2018 23:43

@vinorosso74
They done blood tests.
This is where they start. It's the main issue. So far. But my heart is in my mouth.
I've had him from 12 weeks.

B12 deficiency usually travels with other friends in cats ( IBD, triaditis would be just a couple of examples) are they continuing to do other tests?

Vinorosso74 · 19/11/2018 07:21

Yes! Our girl had triaditis and surgery to remove gall bladder which confirmed the diagnosis of IBD. The B12 injections were given around time of flare ups. Her history got very lengthy so I forget exactly when things happened.

@lone cat, yes, doing other tests too to get handle on where its come from. It seems more a symptom of other things than a stand alone problem in its own right, if I'm reading the vets information correctly, which is why I've posted.

My heart is in my mouth as to what is coming.

I lost 2 cats to cancer, so I'm worried.
Husband still wants me to go on holiday and put him in cattery. I've said No effing way. Anxiety and stress will make it worse and I need to be here for him, and monitor his progress.

First injection today. He took it well, bless his paws.

And he's gained 200g in a week. Doesn't sound much but at least there was no further loss.

Thanks for input. I was able to ask pertinent questions and get response from vet.

Glad it went ok and any weight gain is a positive!
Cats have impeccable timing for being ill so I understand you not wanting to be away for 4 weeks-is there anyone you know and trust who could look after him while you're away?
Paws crossed for him.

NoCanoe · 20/11/2018 17:09

Thanks @vinorosso74. All positive thoughts greatly appreciated. Smile

No, there is nobody I'd trust really and if anything happened I'd be devastated.
I feel it's my place to be with him and monitor him etc.

Perfectly understandable!
We're lucky as the cattery is at the back of our vets so I knew the vets were there if necessary.

Ours has b12 injections every few weeks or when he starts to get lethargic. They give me a bag of them and I do it myself into his scruff. Works wonders.
