Cat getting her teeth out.

I'm taking our cat to get her teeth cleaned (and maybe removed) under anaesthetic on Wednesday and I am so worried! She's 14 and very sweet natured. She's also a very nervous cat. But maybe the worst is taking her and then leaving her! She will think we are abandoning her! She is a rescue cat and I would hate for her to think we were giving her up like her last owners (they gave her up when she was 9). I know it's silly but she is our little baby. My other half is already crying thinking about what could happen to her.

I understand the worry and hate leaving my cats at the vet's too. However to hopefully reassure you, cats don't think logically the way humans do and your girl won't be thinking she's been abandoned or make the connection to when she was previously rehomed.

And she'll feel so much better after her teeth have been sorted out!

Thank you viccat! That's very true lol. We do tend to anthropomorphize her all the time. She does get over it when we take her to the vet and when we have to give her eyedrops. As long as food is on offer she's anyones!

I was very worried taking my Bengal in, I didn’t tell dh he was booked till the morning of the op and he was scared stiff he’d die under ga. I cried dropping him off (when they had to give him a ga to get blood out of him for a kidney function test they probably wondered how anyone could love such a feisty cat) and waited nearby for 8 hours in the car.

He was fine, little bit woozy after the ketamine but eating that night. Mine doesn’t recover from ga well so I had to keep him in one room so he didn’t attempt the stairs. He was noticeably happier afterwards, really cheery.

I would pay for the kidney function test again, it was worth it for the peace of mind.

I cry if they need a GA. I don't think it's silly (but then I wouldn't, because I'm the world's worst!).

Hope it all goes well.

At about that age my old girl had serious stomach surgery. It left her stapled all along her belly. It wasn’t straightforward. But what they removed? It wasn’t cancer and she lived a good few years more.
Your puss will be home in no time and so much more comfortable. Wishing you and puss well.

My girl had some teeth out at 15, we knew there was an increased risk as she had a heart murmur. It's just so awful leaving them on their own but the vet and nurses will look after them.

It was well worth it for my girl, as it made her final 18 months a lot more comfortable. I didn't ask them to, but as soon as it had been done and she was coming around they phoned me. She came home about two hours later.

Oh thank you so much everyone! Your messages make me feel so much better and it's lovely to see so many people who adore their pets :) I'll let you know how she goes on Wednesday. I'm sure she's more fiesty than we realise.

My giant gentle hound had a sedation very recently. She doesn’t like to be away from me and is scared of new people. She was absolutely fine.
Just a tip. When you drop her off tell her it was all OH’s idea. Always best to play it safe with cats. Nobody does revenge like a puss! Grin

FrankieChips · 13/11/2018 13:04

@Wolfiefan haha! Very good idea :)

Thinking of you tomorrow. Hoping all goes smoothly. (But yes. Blame OH!) Grin

So she went into get the op but the blood tests came back with some worrying results with her liver so they need to do more tests. Teeth op delayed for another time but they did look and thing she has a condition called tooth reabsorption which is common in cats. And she might have to have two teeth taken out at the back. So worried about her. We pick her up later tonight. Just hope the bills aren’t too bad. The insurance company don’t tend to pay out for dental. Eeeek!

I hope she’s ok. They are such a worry aren’t they.

frogsbreath · 14/11/2018 22:03

Is the dental work going to go ahead op?

My 13 year old very very healthy and darling cat needs a scale and polish under GA. quoted £450 as they want to do a blood test or two first to check liver and kidneys and now I'm worried about what they might find.

FrankieChips · 14/11/2018 22:47

Just got back from picking her up. There was an emergency going on so they couldn’t go through the test results. They did an ultrasound and it was clear and I’m waiting to hear about the blood tests. Didn’t do the dental.
