My 14 year old rescue cat has kidney failure, but has now developed pancreatitis for some reason. He's on a special renal diet and has been doing okay, but developed a urinary problem a few weeks ago and now the pancreas.

He's been on iv fluids overnight in the cat clinic and returned home on Friday. I have oral anti-emetic tablets to give him and morphine which I give by injection. He's stopped eating and I can't get the anti-emetic into him today. He has had an injection though, so I think he's out of pain.

I'm so sad about this. He is the most amazing cat and so nice and gentle. I don't know what could be wrong. I'm expecting results of a pancreatic blood test back tomorrow.

I don't think it's fair on him to continue like this as he hates going to the vets and there's obviously something seriously wrong.

How's he doing @citiesofbismuth?

citiesofbismuth · 14/11/2018 22:51

Hi, he's been back to the vets and she says to continue with the pain relief and anti sickness med. I can't get the antibiotics into him as he just refuses to eat the food with it in. She said not to worry about those. He's lost a little bit more weight, but not lots. He seems comfortable.

He is refusing his renal food and I'm just giving him high quality chicken and seafood cat food - Applaws etc. He's getting a blood test on Tuesday to check his renal function due to him being on the non renal foods.

I don't know how the pancreas is doing and she said just to keep him comfy and play it by ear. He's in stage 3 renal failure, so I don't know how long he can live on that level, but as long as he's not distressed it's okay.

If he has another bad decline or event, I'm going to ask for home euthanasia.

I'm going to try and post a photo as I have a couple of nice ones. Thank you for asking after him.

What a gorgeous boy. We can usually get medication into our cat in his food, but if we can't we give him Hills A/D which is a pate type food for recuperating cats. Also he's a fussy eater he snarfs it down along with the medication! He can't have a lot as he's got kidney issues and it's high in protein but it does the job if he needs medication.

If he's not eating his renal food has your vet mentioned phosphate binders that can go in his normal food? Mine has Ipakitine, but there are others that are supposed to be better but Harry won't take them. Harry's CKD was very early stage and we managed to get his readings back to a normal range.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, he's gorgeous!

Glad he's doing better. He's a beautiful boy.

What a cutie! I hope he will have a good quality of life for a long time.

citiesofbismuth · 15/11/2018 10:15

I'll certainly ask about the phosphate binders.

I don't know if his pancreatitis will make a difference but it's definitely worth asking.

The first one we tried was Pronefra, and he ate his food with it for a while and then started refusing it (the vet called it the Pronefra Protest), we then tried another one, which apparently they had never known a cat refuse. Until Harry. Someone on here recommended Ipakitine but the vet wasn't keen on him having it as apparently there are better ones out there but I pointed out they are only better if he'll take them and she gave in. I now buy it from Fetch as it's cheaper than getting it from the vet and we haven't got an insurance claim for his kidneys at the moment.
