Best dry food

Our female house cat has Royal Canin sterilised dry food. She was on RC at the breeder and didn’t get on with any of the alternatives that she tried as a kitten (awful wind, diarrhoea or stinky poo). We tried applaws and another higher meat food.

So when we changed her onto adult food we automatically went for the RC. But I’ve reacentlu realised that it’s not the best quality. On the up side her stomach is fine, she is a good weight and her poo hardly smells but I don’t know whether I should swap to something better? Or what to swap to if I do?
Could anyone with more experience please advise me?
Thanks so much

Mine like Encore. Its 80% meat and I get it from asda. Also like thrive but I need to order it from Amazon

Shocksandboooos · 10/11/2018 20:20

I am only find small bags of encore on Asda’s website and it would work out very expensive. That’s a shame.

That's the problem when they have extra meat in them and no cereals, they get more expensive. I have 2 cats and they have a mix of wet and dry food so the encore does last a wee while

Zooplus does good deals on grain free cat food. Purizon is good too - 70% meat

norfolkandchanceyou · 10/11/2018 20:27

I give mine purina one along with wet and occasional raw food.

I have 7 cats and they are all in great condition.

oopslateagain · 10/11/2018 20:34

Mine are on Acana, they do three flavours. It has nothing artificial, no grains, and it's 75% meat. It's expensive, but you find the better the quality, the less they need. Mine like the most expensive (of course!) It's just under £50 a large bag, and it feeds my three cats for six weeks.

Thank you so much for the replies. Who would have thought that It was such a minefield.
I am happy to spend up to the £25 per 4kg that the RC costs but really can’t afford to go beyond that.

Applaws. Grain free.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 10/11/2018 22:28

Our rescue was overweight when we got her, She likes Harrington’s, and also likes the Lidl one., (she’s easily pleased). She has dry food in the morning and one of the little purina melting heart tins in the evening. She’s still a fat lump but she’s losing a bit of weight now. (Turns her nose up at fresh salmon but like an occasional cheese and onion crisp though 😂)

Sanabelle from ZooPlus is a great option. Once you find one your cat likes (get the smaller bags), you can get 2 x 10kg for £50. It's grain free and high protein, really good stuff.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/11/2018 22:38

I came across a new brand called Scrumbles last week. It's got probiotics and is designed for cars with dodgy tummies. I'm trying to swap my two on to it. It's gluten and grain free and high meat.

Does anyone know what this is like? Our local pet shop stocks it and it would be so much easier to buy it from them. Plus I like to try to buy locally.

Have a look at Zooplus. It's so convenient getting it all delivered. Loads of grain-free high meat options as well, European brands tend to be cheaper than your Thrive, Lily's Kitchen etc.

I've also gone for Sanabelle.

Shocksandboooos · 11/11/2018 10:06

Having it delivered is actually a bit of a pain for us. I hate having to be in for deliveries as there is nowhere that they can be left. I would rather go to collect it. Plus I resent paying for delivery when it’s the less convenient option.

It doesn't look too bad although it seems to has a lot of potato in it

dementedpixie · 11/11/2018 10:14

Mine liked AVA dry stuff from pets at home which has more meat and less potato than Arden grange

Dollymixture22 · 11/11/2018 10:16

I am still using kitten food, but I find both applaws and lily’s kitchen good. They have high meat content spans no cereal.

I try to keep dry food to about 25% of her diet - I know some people are strongly opposed to dry food, but my kitten loves it and I find it convenient.

Wet food I use thrive, lily’s kitchen and applaws.

Shocksandboooos · 11/11/2018 10:25

Mine won’t touch wet. Fussy, contrary buggers cats are!

I give my 2 half a tin/ pouch each 3 times a day and they will miaow for it in the morning if we are running a bit late with it. After much trial and error they eat gourmet solitaire duck or beef with tomato and gourmet perle pouches. They will not eat smooth pate style foods which most of the 'good' stuff is

Silverstreaks · 17/11/2018 11:38

We buy Eden Holistic dry food.
It's a great quality grain free kibble.

chaoscategorised · 19/11/2018 18:30

Ours have Canagan - high meat content & grain free, and the difference between when we got them (eating Whiskas) to now is amazing. Shiny shiny coats, poo smells much less disgusting, you feed them a tiny amount comparatively cos it's not full of crap so they poo less, and they're just super healthy. It's expensive (I'm not sure how much exactly!) but a big 4kg bag lasts us about month for two cats (although ours also get half a can of Canagan wet tuna and mussels in the morning each too...spoiled buggers).

WatcherOfTheNight · 19/11/2018 18:40

I also shop via zooplus,I find they've a much better selection of good quality foods & excellent value.
They've a wide variety of foods that are high meat content & grain /sugar free.
Ours have either purizon, wild freedom or Nutro dry & a tray of Von Feinsten or My star wet.
All are at least 60% meat .
