Which food?

We're getting two kittens soon. The lady we are getting them from said they're on whiskas at the moment (they were originally meant to be going to another family who asked that she use that brand as it's what they can get easily in their local shop) but she said she personally prefers iams and would never use whiskas with her own cats.

We're happy to stick with whiskas, but if that's not great nutritionally I'm happy to change to something better quality.

I know that if we do change over we need to do it very gradually.

Personally I would switch them to a raw diet. You can either buy premade raw in Pets at home in their freezer section my cats prefer the chicken.

Also I tend to buy them the raw chicken breast mince in the freezer section at Icelands which they love and they like steak or beef mince with a 5% fat ratio.

Other than that I feed them animonda carny which I get from zooplus as the consistency is good and it is not bulked up with all kinds of crap and they love it.

I also have them on a high protein kibble i.e Purizon.

But if you go through Zooplus they are fantastic with their prices far cheaper than the high street.

If you look at what is actually in high street food you will see most of it is veg, grain, ash very low protein contents and cats are not vegetarians. hence why so many cats have problems with teeth and health in general.

Do some research, have a look at a few of the raw cat feeders groups on facebook. People will be able to give you good direction but personally I would stay away from high street food.

Really interested in raw feeding, I'll certainly look it to it. Seems much more natural I guess!

@Beaverhausen I get my kitties their raw stuff from www.rawpetsupplies.co.uk/

Beaverhausen · 12/11/2018 17:05

@TheBreastmilksOnMe thank you, I was looking at Kiezebrink, have you tried them before?

Beaverhausen · 12/11/2018 17:09

@theSnuffster it definately is, most vets will say don't but my vet always comes to on tips for raw feeding or puts others in touch.

My cats are in such a good condition since changing to raw @TheBreastsmilksOnMe can attest to it. There are companies out there who provide frozen for you.

Also there are a few raw support groups on facebook but make sure you choose one for cats as they will be a lot more helpful.

It might seem gross and trust me there are times when I am dry heaving but my cats love it. Unlike TheBreastMilksonMe I do supplement with kibble but you do not need too if your cats are on raw, I have 11 cats so for some just raw is all they need the others still like their kibble too. And they love raw chicken wings and necks.

If you feed raw, make sure you include offal as muscle meat alone is too low in taurine, an essential nutrient for cats. It is a good diet but you do have to research it carefully as it is easier to get it wrong in cats than in dogs, due to them being obligate carnivores.

Thanks for the advice. I definitely won't do anything without researching properly first. I plan on keeping them on whatever they're currently eating for a while anyway and doing a gradual change over once they're settled in.
