How do I keep the cat from scratching the sofa?

We're getting a new sofa next week. I'm very excited but also a bit concerned that my cat may scratch it to ribbons (as she has our current one!). We've got every scratching post going, horizontal scratchers too and she does use the posts, but she climbs the sofa using her claws and scratches the arms, often when she wants letting out or some attention, but sometimes seemingly just for the fun of it!

Any tips?

Sprayed mine with Impulse body spray!! Dcats hated it!!

Tin foil, they hate it. We put it over the arms of a new sofa for a few days and after that the cat never showed any interest in it.

Ah. And how do I go about securing the tin foil in place? We tried it with the table, but she persevered until the foil was knocked off. I've now conceded that battle and the table is one of her napping places. Sad. I will see if I can find a spray she hates the smell of.

Shout no v clearly each time. Make it clear it is scratching post only. If caught in the act a clear tap on the nose - like her mum would have done telling her off.

One of these positioned carefully is bloody marvellous for keeping cats off places you don't want them to go:

Ours has only gone off twice for each place we have used it - one puff the first time cat jumped on worktop, and then cat gave it a second go just to be sure. Cat has never gone near worktop ever again. Same with dining room table and so on. Far better than messing about with tinfoil which the cat basically laughed at.

@AnnaMagnani that looks like it might help with the table issue at least! Is the spray air or a mist?

We taped the foil on with masking tape, but if it's a leather sofa that may not be a good idea.

It's just air. We found we were able to teach cats not to go on tables, worktops etc when we were there but they thought that the rules didn't apply when we weren't looking - clever cats!

We know it works as we could hear the worktop offender leaping up from our bedroom. She jumped off in seconds the first time it went off, next night she thought she'd give it another try as it couldn't be true... we heard a scrabble and a cry of disgust as she legged it off the worktop. Set it up a few more nights but she never tried it again.

Since then have used it with kittens on the dining room table and similar response - one puff sends them off, they have another go another time and that's that.

The puff is really gentle - it is just a puff. It's more the shock that deters the cat than anything else.

Can you put sellotape on key areas? Apparently, they don't like the feel and can be removed after a couple of days.

@MrsCat it's a leather sofa so I'd be worried about the adhesive. Maybe I could put sellotape on a blanket or something and cover the sofa with that.
