Cat flap paranoia !

HazelBite · 07/11/2018 17:33

A few weeks ago I posted asking if the cat flaps that only open in response to a cats microchip were any good. I got positive replies and purchased one to replace the existing cat flap ( we had problems with an interloper!) New cat flap exactly same size so was put in the position of our original one.
Both cats reluctant to use it at first but our female cat started using it after a few days.
Two weeks on and our ginger tom refuses to use it . He was outside all last night in the rain. Even if it is held open (from inside) he still won't come in.
DH has pushed him through a few times and the flap works fine.
Any suggestions?

No idea, sorry. We have had a chip cat fall for several years now. 2/3 cats use it happily, 1 will go out but not come in. She never has. She will sit at the window crying pitifully until someone opens the font door for her. I have yet to decide which of us is the stupid one Wink

We've got a microchip one and DCat (8months when we got it) was quite reluctant at first. However he is super food motivated so we used biscuits to help tempt him through, holding it open a bit at first. Also at his dinner time (when he has a pouch of wet food) one of us would take him out and the other would be inside with his food dish emptying the pouch, which he could see through the flap and soon enough he was managing by himself.

Silly question, but are you sure that you've made sure the cat flap has recognised his microchip properly?

But other than that, some of them take longer than others. We adopted our two cats a few years ago - neither of them had been chipped (so we had that done) and neither of them had ever used a cat flap before. It took Cat1 a week before he 'got it'. Cat2 took over three weeks! I just about burst into tears once I realised he'd 'got it'!

Perseverance? Shake a pack of Dreamies inside whilst he's sitting outside? Or vice versa?

Good luck. It's not easy.

I don’t know but my stupid bengals won’t even though I posted them through loads. I had some success sprinkling cat treats al over it.

Also now I have ours taped open. Maybe do that for a few weeks to get them used to it

We couldn't leave our SureFlap taped open because of so many neighbouring cats wanting to come in! It's hard if you have that scenario.
