My cat is freezing - does anyone cat (or dog) wear a coat?

He is poorly he had 11 teeth out

And he is so cold - I thought I'd get him a coat - but how do you know what size to buy?

Ah, poor thing. Could you put a hot water bottle under his bed. Most cats don't do clothes.

The cat that stays with us had to have most of his teeth out too. Got over it pretty quickly and can now still eat his biscuit which I was surprised at!

Is your cat shivering or something? When did he have the OP?

ifonly4 · 05/11/2018 14:44

If your cat is noticeably cold after having an operation, I'd phone and speak to the vet - his body may be in shock. Short term I'd put the heating on/turn it up a bit higher than normal. You can buy self heating mats, you could check if your local pet shop has one.

Sorry it was last Wednesday

He has been snuggling in bed ever since as I am post-op too

But today we went for a walk (he walks on a lead but we had got out the habit but it's good mobilisation for me - he ran right up to his harness and put his head in - so obvs happy) and when I came back I didn't get back into bed and the back door is open as he is allowed out again today

& now the poor thing is creeping round the floor and trying to get under my clothes

I did think about a coat last winter but I am wondering again

now the poor thing is creeping round the

He may just be coming out in sympathy with you, but if you have any concerns he's noticeably colder since the op, I'd get him checked by the vet.

KatyMac · 05/11/2018 15:52

He has a check up on Wednesday

I guess I just worried cos his fur looked ruffled and he has been burying himsefl under clothes and cushions

Your cat thinks he's human, so a coat sounds like a good idea Smile

I agree with ifonly4 about the shock, or maybe an infection.

After a week our cat was mostly back to normal but I don't know if that's unusual with that operation.

Is he eating well?

KatyMac · 05/11/2018 16:58

Yes he is eating OK - more wet food than normal but some dry (he turned his nose up at dry food soaked in water as suggested at the vets)

The heating has come onand he is being more active and less snuggly

I can try a coat if he hates it, he hates it! I was the same about the lead & he loved that

They've got some jazzy cat coats in Pets at Home, I saw them the other day. Smile

How warm is your house for your little furball?

This article springs to mind regarding this question and it's so ideal for you

Hope this helps

Ollivander84 · 05/11/2018 23:57

Couple of tips that might help?

You can get heating mats for cats (Amazon)

I got a great igloo cat bed off eBay, can find the link. It's big and hooded and seems to trap heat

I've lined the igloo with a real sheepskin offcut (again can find link) was about £15 and mine ADORES it

Make sure any beds are raised off the floor to keep them warmer

Even something like draping a blanket over a chair or cushions to make a den will trap heat in

Amazon also have heat reflecting mats which reflect their own body heat back

KatyMac · 06/11/2018 09:18

I think he is just a wuss!

Even in the summer he crawls under the bike cover and sleeps - it must be like a sauna under there!!

I guess I was thinking of when I take him for a walk (must do more walking!! For me not him - he can keep me company if he comes when I get the lead out)

The house is too warm atm we turned it up when I came out of hospital! Prob 19 or 20 most of the day and 7 ay night

My ancient old moggy used to wear little woolly jumpers. She wore the smallest sized dog jumpers I could get at Pets at Home - on the vet's advice! She was so old and creaky she couldn't groom her long fur anymore. So to prevent the matting becoming painful for her we'd have her clipped, but being ancient she had no body fat and would be freezing cold - hence the jumpers.

Ones that slip on with no fasteners we found were best. Ones that have fasteners got wriggled out of, but the little woolly pull-on ones were winners, and she looked completely ridiculous adorable in them too Grin

Thanks rat - useful to know

Equafleece do some excellent dog coats in a wide variety of sizes.

Might be worth having a look to see if any of them are vaguely cat shaped?

Santaispolishinghissleigh · 07/11/2018 11:28

Not sure Hamish would wear this outdoors but he seems happy enough in it!!

We went with this one

He isn't a massive fan but is snuggled "under" it next to me to get used to it

Short walk today for both of us

Oh he’s a Siamese...

My Siamese had jumpers, again just the smallest dog ones from PAH, they made her so happy, it was bizarre, lol

CoolCarrie · 07/11/2018 15:27

He is lovely and cute in his new coat, I am sure he will get used to it.

KatyMac · 07/11/2018 15:57

Sat in bed with me his ears are still cold!

He didn't fight the coat just looked surprised! He was most dosconcerted when he tried to lick his back

This is the Large - I picked up medium and small to try but the medium didn't even cover the end of his ribs!!

The nurse was a bit dubious but the practise manager and the vet were all for it as long as it was velcro'd not fastened securely

KatyMac · 07/11/2018 19:46

Oh bless! He must have suffered with all that sunshine - does he need suncream?

OP posts:
Madbengalmum · 07/11/2018 19:49

Katymac, he has a uv suit!

KatyMac · 07/11/2018 20:00

norfolkandchanceyou · 07/11/2018 20:15
