Fleas!!

We are looking after a cat whilst his owner is away and noticed flea dirt on him last night. Now we have what looks like an infested mattress (person sleeping in it has been bitten).
Owner says he treated him a week ago (Not sure if he did or not)
What is the best way to tackle this, main concern is the mattress. Would sprays/boil wash be enough or would we need to use a flea bomb? I've not had a cat for years!
Also what flea treatment for the cat do i need and is it safe for him to have it if he was done recently?
Thanks in advance, before I spend loads and recharge the owner!!!

I'm confused. How can you boil wash a mattress? Do you mean the sheets/bedding? In which case just normal washing will be fine.

You need to ask the owner what he used. I'm guessing he's either lying, or he used an over the counter treatment, or Frontline (which fleas have become immune to). You shouldn't really use anything else on the cat for another week (so a two week gap).

You need Advantage, which you can buy in Chemists or vets or from Pets at Home or online.

In the meantime get the flea comb out and try to reduce the amount that way.

This is bad news. You'll have to treat everything with flea spray - the sort you get from the vets. Then hoover like mad, and repeat the process. If the cat has fleas, the owner had lied about it being treated. And poor kitty! Very very uncomfortable for them.
