Myself and DD were cycling to school yesterday morning. About 500m from our house DD spotted a cat trying to cross the very busy road near the park. I called the cat and it mewed and it's tail shot up in the air. We stopped the bikes and I managed to grab the cat and get it and DD to safety.

The cat wasn't injured and purred when I picked it up. I had to make an instant decision, take DD to school and hope the cat would be ok, or bring the cat home and check it properly. The decision was made for me by DD bursting in to tears declaring we couldn't leave the cat.

With the cat in one hand, bicycle in the other, myself and DD trudged home. The cat was pretty good. I had to put it down to get the gate open and it meowed and followed us home.

Once home I had a proper look at it. It sniffed around, registering that there are three other cats living in the house, they were out at the time. My DH brought our now chirpy DD to school with a tale to tell.

We brought the cat to our vet. It was easy to catch and put in the cat box and apart from some unparliamentary language there was no trouble.

The vet gave the cat a good going over and ascertained that he's an un-neutered 7 month old boy. Apart from some matted fur, he's in great condition. He's booked in for the snip on Thursday.

At the moment he's at home. He's a real purr monster, very people friendly and confident. He's used the litter tray and scoffed plates of food. He's growling at the other cats who are put out but tolerant.

This is Leaf!

What if he stays entire? He's more likely to get into fights and get nasty wounds and he's more likely to wander. Plus he could father hosts of unwanted kittens. Getting him snipped is the best thing.

Not sure why you're getting a bashing OP You are planning to advertise him. I wish people would get their cats bloody neutered!!

TheLongRider · 27/10/2018 13:01

There is no reasoning with some people. I have said I will do my best to find his owners. At present he's in my house eating my food and has several warm nests to curl up in. He's safe and secure. Short of taking out national advertising there's not much I can do.

My personal experience is that here people get cute kittens and then when they're not so cute they end up as strays. My local SPCA is full and so is the Cat's Protection.

If anyone feels strongly I'll set up a just giving page and you can contribute to my costs. Wink Or else you can donate to your local Catsaid and make sure your own cat is chipped.

I’m sure the vet can tell a cat whose been living rough. If your cat was missing you’d put posters up wouldnt you?

SoupDragon · 27/10/2018 13:03

🙄

SoupDragon · 27/10/2018 13:03

That only helps if someone looks for posters.

onedayiwillmissthis · 27/10/2018 13:05

You can't just go around stealing people's young cats...feckin hell.

If you really believe it is a stray...really🤔...then you will have the decency to put posters up in area, give details of cat to all vets and cat society's around area you 'found' the cat.

And cancel that neutering appointment till absolutely sure you have the right to make that decision.

If it truly is a stray then well done. But if not you're one c.f.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/10/2018 13:05

Sounds like a stray to me (that was my assumption from the start). If not I hope that the owner is grateful for the good care he has received.

MrsChollySawcutt · 27/10/2018 13:06

But there's just no sane reason in your OP for catching and taking home this particular cat other than that it was out walking by a road.

Your vet has estimated he is 7 months old, that's not necessarily accurate. His owners may already have been planning to neuter him at 6 months.

Are you going to steal every cat that crosses your path on the school run?

CallMeRachel · 27/10/2018 13:11

Crikey, poor cat doesn't know what's going on. One minute he's out for a stroll next minute two crazy cat cyclists are grabbing him and taking him away!!??

Cats are free to roam aren't they? It would be different if he was injured or distressed... the vet should have given you a firm telling off and told you to return him to exactly where you found him.

How would you feel if someone picked up one of your three cats off the street and arranged an operation with intention of keeping it? Well out of order!!

Soubriquet · 27/10/2018 13:17

My cat lives outdoors. She has a bed outside, a bed inside, food and water and is free to come indoors and outdoors as she pleases.

She usually comes in to eat and then fucks off again.

She doesn’t wear a collar as she is petrified of them. She is microchipped but it hasn’t been checked in a while so could have failed.

I would be furious if my cat went missing because someone picked her off the street.

She free roams!

Mind you, she doesn’t like people apart from us so the chances of you getting close enough to touch her would be amazing in the first place

Bitchbe · 27/10/2018 13:18

Our vet is one of the neuter at six months brigade. He could be that age.
Yes I would put posters up but given he was only picked up yesterday they might not be overly worried by now.

Our vet wouldn't neuter a cat found 24 hours ago tbh.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/10/2018 13:19

A lost poster on a lamppost is pretty obvious.

I’m waiting now for someone to say “well what if your blind and live alone with no internet access so you can’t check on fb & you can’t speak to use a phone to ring vets & you have no carers to help you?”

TheLongRider · 27/10/2018 13:26

To be honest his chances of being killed/ seriously injured within a couple of minutes when we found him were pretty high. He was in the road, during rush hour, not casually walking along the pavement. He was very glad to be rescued at that time.

Again, for the hard of thinking, I will do my best to find his owners.

In your OP you don’t mention looking for his owners once. I imagine that is what people are picking up on.

Princess9891 · 27/10/2018 13:42

My cat is currently missing and looks an awful lot like the cat you have stolen. Can you pop him back outside please, I am fuming!

kaldefotter · 27/10/2018 13:46

You've kidnapped another family's cat! Why can't you see that? And your OP made no mention of trying to find the owners, so it's natural that people would be cynical about your intentions. Let the cat go. Just because it purrs doesn't make it yours.

Dumbledoresgirl · 27/10/2018 13:48

When I found a similar looking kitten approximately aged 4 - 5 months on the street, unchipped, unneutered, dirty matted fur, fleas, eye infection, etc etc, the vets insisted own keeping him for a week to give the owners time to claim him. No one did, and he is now my much beloved cat, and I hope the same happens for you, but I am amazed your vet isn't insisting on a period of time for the owners to make enquiries.

whatifido · 27/10/2018 14:06

OP I'm sure you will offer this cat a lovely home if its owner can not be found! However as the cat if friendly, litter trained and in good condition I imagine he has an owner who is probably missing him like crazy!
Please list him on all your local lost and found facebook pages, notify all local vets that you have found him and poster the local area, particularly around where you stole him from!
If no one comes forward then by all means get him neutered and keep him but taking home a random cat who shows no outward signs of being a stray and deciding to keep him without doing everything you can to find his owner is awful!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/10/2018 14:09

found him and poster the local area, particularly around where you stole him from

I prefer rescued given that the alternative seemed to be being deceased on the motorway.

JennyHolzersGhost · 27/10/2018 14:14

There’s plenty you can do, not that you seem inclined to do any of it unless MN shames you into it.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2018 14:16

the alternative seemed to be being deceased on the motorway.

Motorway?

Catsize · 27/10/2018 14:18

That's the healthiest looking stray I've seen.

I'm not convinced there will be much owner hunting. As has been pointed out, no mention of such in the OP.

VisitorsEntrance · 27/10/2018 14:22

Have you listed him as found on any local Facebook groups?

FortniteIsTheNewCrack · 27/10/2018 14:33

So yesterday you brought him home, booked him in at the vets and named him...but you weren't going to keep him?! Uh huh.

It was clear from your OP you had no intention of trying to find his owners. This thread isn't going to go the way you expected, which was clearly congratulations and well done. He is well groomed and presented and possibly too young to have been neutered yet. He may have had a collar which he removed!

I understand the desire to catnap him, in fact one of my cats is a rescue we found, but his owners were located and confirmed they had dumped him (the cruel bastards). However we also found a cat near us with no road sense, also suburbia. We knocked on doors where the cat was found, no success, and put up posters and the cat's owner was located.

My insurance covers the cost of posters and a reward if my cat goes missing. If the owners do this, how is your DD going to be about handing him back?
