Getting her into a cat travel basket..

After a fruitless half an hour trying to catch her and get her into her travel box we had to cancel the vet trip (blood in poo intermittently - I have the enchanting job of poking about in her litter tray for daily inspections).

She was in the living room and managed to find various places to hide. Can't pick her up even on a friendly basis only had for a week - She had been staying at cat rescue for a few months and possibly stray before that. She is a nervous cat not used to being handled at the best of times given her history. I recall the lass at the sanctuary saying 'good luck getting that one to the vets'

I put treats and food in her basket and she was in there purring at 11pm last night.

Maybe if I get her used to it as non threatening I can lure her in on Friday for rearranged vets appt?

Tips welcome.

Youtube vets demonstrating how to get cat into travel box have got THE most placid and cooperative cats featuring in the videos!

It was not like this yesterday with Ivy :( Think we were equally traumatised by it.

We made friends later when I gave her some salmon after tea time and I apologised for my earlier misdemeanours.

A top opening car carrier is essential I think - I have one of those ones like a rectangular cage where the whole lid opens. It's still tricky getting all four legs in but far easier than a front-loader!

CaT carrier 🙄

No more Mr nice guy, you need to swoop and drop (wearing protective clothing) Top tip, don't do this on a rug or carpet, a determined kitty can dig their claws in and become as one with the carpet.

My current three all hate the box (they dislike being picked up too). After many years of cat ownership I do the following: have a bigger carrier than normal. Drop towel over cat and swiftly wrap them. Put cat into box backwards. Secure door with a piece of paracaord.

The big wire mesh boxes that open at the top are easier, it’s more difficult for them to starfish their legs. Still not always easy though.

Ivy’s very cute, I love her nose. She does look a bit feisty though!

Nearly got a whisker cut off this afto as she came investigating whilst I was sewing!

This is my method: keep basket out of sight, approach cat from behind when distracted or asleep, grab and swiftly push into carrier. You have one chance only - once they get wind of your intentions the game is up.

I put it on the dining table covered with a towel, leaving the door uncovered.
Pick cat up, cuddle then put her straight in.

She hates being picked up at the best of times though.

Can you cover her in a blanket and pick her up wrapped up

simonisnotme · 26/10/2018 18:10

when we had our cats I bought 2 plastic cat boxes that open at the top, from the vets I think .so much easier to plonk cat in then close the lid rather that stuffing them in a small opening with legs outstretched
similar to this one

It's easier to put the cat in the carrier backwards than forwards.

blitzen · 26/10/2018 18:14

Put basket on its side with the door facing the ceiling. Quickly pick up cat and put it in and close the door. Then carefully put the box the right way round x

For a really bad cat, corner her and throw a towel over her. Wrap up body and legs. Throw in carrier.
We hide the carrier, shut cat in a small room, crack out the dreamies, catch him, restrain legs, put in top opening carrier.

Nah they hang like a bag of potato’s when u scruff them, can’t get you. Pet her over the back of her head and down her neck a few times then turn it into a scruff. Into carrier and close the door basically on your hand while still scruffing then release and slide your hand out fast as you can pushing the door of the cage shut. It’s like performing an exorcism As soon as you start trying to push them in
