So just got a cat. How often should I change the cat litter and what's the best kind to use? Thanks

And what is the process ?

Depends on the type of litter tbh. Non clumping will need poo scooping as soon as possible. Change tray every week maybe. Clumping litter means you can scoop out pee and poo and needs changing much less often

If it's a kitten I would avoid clay clumping but the eco stuff should be ok e.g. cats best, worlds best

dementedpixie · 24/10/2018 17:34

Process? You mean how to clean it out?
I tip the litter into a bin bag and use litter tray spray and kitchen roll to clean it before adding fresh litter. I get the spray from pets at home

I use wood pellet litter and scoop poo daily (or more often if I'm around when they go) and also scoop away some of the litter that's turned into saw dust, and top up with fresh litter. I then change the whole lot maybe every 5-7 days depending on how it's looking.

When I change it completely I use a cat safe cleaner and kitchen roll to wipe it before adding fresh litter.

We have covered litter trays, currently 3 trays for 3 cats.

I have a big covered tray and use wooden pellets. I scoop a poo out when it occurs and like pp I scoop some sawdust out and top up.
I clean the whole thing out every weekend by scooping everything out. I take it to the outside tap and rinse it all out, then clean with multipurpose cleaner and dry. Top up with more litter.

I don’t use plastic liners as mine is quite high backed and he rips them to shreds. I don’t use newspaper to line either as it holds the smell of urine.

newcat · 24/10/2018 18:53

Thanks. So is the wooden pellets the best option? Where in your house do you keep it ?

I use Oko world's best, with four indoor cats.
It gets scooped daily, topped up weekly, and a full clean once a month, it's brilliant stuff.

newcat · 24/10/2018 20:05

Thanks Brillo. Are they they all house cats ? Where do you keep the litter tray?

Sorry missed the "indoor" part, it's been a long day.

we used the recycled newspaper stuff - much less dusty.

scoop anything out twice a day and full clean out once a week.

ours are in the basement

dementedpixie · 24/10/2018 20:20

We have a large kitchen diner and ours is in a corner area in there. Mine rarely use it now as they go outside instead

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/10/2018 20:23

I have the litter trays in the hallway.

ilovesooty · 24/10/2018 21:16

I use wood pellets and have a covered tray in the cupboard under the stairs. When I give it a full clean out I take it outside and give it a good wash out with the garden hose.

newcat · 25/10/2018 19:15

What size are your trays? My kittens is about the size of a sink basin and I feel like I need to complete change and clean it at LEAST every other day to be hygienic. I must be missing something.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 25/10/2018 19:27

I have an extra large tray

dementedpixie · 25/10/2018 19:28
