Teeth!

Vaccinations today. So one has put on too much weight. And the other one needs regular teeth cleaning.
How??????
They are naughty torties. Recommendations please for the most effective way to improve things without sustaining life changing personal injury. Confused

More dry food might help both things? There are tooth-cleaning formulations. I've no experience using them unfortunately, but thought I'd volunteer a crappy minimum of information because this is after all the Internet!

Wolfiefan · 15/10/2018 12:26

They have a choice of wet or dry. After saying dry food made no difference the vet did have to admit the dried food fan has better teeth. But is fat!!

Dried food and microchip cat feeders - weigh out food for both of them. Amazon Prime day is coming soon, you might get a bargain. Good luck!

SpoonBlender · 15/10/2018 12:35

I'm hoping for someone who's had success to jump in. Our tortie is also a guzzler, though we (or perhaps the other two cats) have managed to persuade her to wait for the others to finish eating before troughing the leftovers from their bowls. We tried a bunch of different foods including just (high-protein) dry and nothing changed - she had a starvation day when she was 5 weeks old and mum was chased away by a fox, we think that's where she got it.

Wolfiefan · 15/10/2018 12:35

One doesn’t like the dried food. She would rather starve! Yes will look into microchip feeders.

Raw chicken wings are good for teeth.

PlateOfBiscuits · 15/10/2018 15:20

I really recommend these dental biscuits. You can use them as a meal or just give two or three as a treat. My cat loves them and they’ve really helped her teeth.

I thought it was dangerous to give cats tiny chicken bones @HardAsSnails Where did you get this info from?

POPholditdown · 15/10/2018 15:28

Can’t help with weight, but my vet gave me something called Plaque Off which you sprinkle on food. It smells like fish so the cats don’t turn their noses up too much. Cost £8 from the vet, I think it’s available to buy online for a bit more though.

HardAsSnails · 15/10/2018 15:33

Plate as long as they're raw they're fine. Cats manage rat and rabbit bones.

Wolfiefan · 15/10/2018 15:35

I had thought about raw feeding. We feed the dog raw!
Thanks for the info about the biscuits.

My old boy (16+) is on a mix of wet, dry and raw, vet was very impressed with his health and teeth at last check up.

PlateOfBiscuits · 15/10/2018 15:46

Every day’s a school day!

GreyHare · 15/10/2018 15:52

Raw Chicken bones are fine, cooked are not, I have cats with teeth issues and they don't actually have enough teeth left to chew on bones, and they have let me know in their delightful rip your face way that brushing their teeth is not an option, so I give them Logic toothpaste, they will happily lick it off my finger, it's poultry favoured, yum, but their teeth (what's left of them) are in good nick and I do the same with my dogs and they always get good remarks about the state of their teeth too.

You can also get additives to put in their drinking water too, but my cats refused to drink the water as they could tell I had laced it with something, Oh and the biscuit cleans their teeth equates to feeding your kids or yourselves crunchy biscuits to clean your teeth, it doesn't work and is just a lie made up by companies to sell pet food.

PlateOfBiscuits · 15/10/2018 21:58

I disagree about the biscuits GreyHare. It’s only anecdotal evidence but her teeth are much better since she’s been on the dental biscuits. And we moved vets since we started them so it’s not like one vet was on commission or anything.
