Is Royal canin dry food worth it?

I've always used it for my cat since he was a kitten, but I do wonder sometimes if it is worth the price. Any experiences/thoughts?

We gave our old cat Hills from when we adopted her aged 6 thinking it was good. Turns out is was pretty crap and full of grain fillers which was doing her no good as turned out she had IBD.
So I don't think Hills, Royal Canin and Purina are that great. That said I think they are better than Gocat and Whiskas etc.
Our new lad has high meat content, grain free food (Thrive) which is comparable in price to Hills, Royal Canin etc.
There are some better quality foods out there and some junk.

dementedpixie · 13/10/2018 18:38

I think it is overpriced as it doesn't have a lot of meat and had lots of cereals. I would look for better quality tbh

dementedpixie · 13/10/2018 18:40

I also use thrive plus encore and purizon which range from 70-90% meat

BiscuitDrama · 13/10/2018 18:41

It’s cheaper on amazon than pets at home etc if that helps at all. Sometimes not all sizes are available but they do reappear.

Wolfiefan · 13/10/2018 18:44

There is a dog food comparison site. Is there a cat food one? We tried Canagan and another one that’s supposed to be better quality. Mine like James Wellbeloved grain free.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2018 18:45

My cats had Royal Canin Persian and did really well on it. It makes Cheddar sick so they now have aromatic exigent. They have lovely fur and no fur balls.

SandraTheBee · 13/10/2018 18:52

Thanks, I always look mourned for the best deal on Royal canin, but interesting that it is full of grains. I will check out the thrive.

I get it from amazon

Icklepup · 13/10/2018 18:59

It's rubbish

Vinorosso74 · 13/10/2018 19:30

I ordered direct from Thrive as Zooplus don't seem to stock the dry Thrive anymore.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 13/10/2018 19:39

It's the only food our cat can eat that doesn't give him the shits/vomits (he's on the gastro-intestinal stuff). We buy it from animeddirect.co.uk - cheaper than Amazon and more consistently in stock.

SandraTheBee · 14/10/2018 09:38

I looked at thrive, it’s very expensive!

Maybe it's because it has meat in it rather than cereals. What do you currently pay for royal canin?

dementedpixie · 14/10/2018 09:51

Thrive has increased in price. Amazon had it for£9.99 and now it seems to be £13.99

Vinorosso74 · 14/10/2018 10:07

Yeah Zooplus used to have it for £9.99 or a twin pack at £18.99. Direct from Thrive it's £12.99-delivert is free for over £30.
I'm hoping by feeding better quality food there may be less vet bills in the future......

Rockbird · 14/10/2018 11:04

What's the verdict on Sainsbury's grain free? I saw it the other day and wondered about it?

Branleuse · 14/10/2018 11:10

I cant tell the difference between cats that eat any of the different foods.

My cats all seem to like supacat dried food and i get it from amazon for about £20 for a massive bag. They have lidl wet food once a day. They are sleek and shiny coated healthy cats that occasionally top up their diet with a mouse or rat.

Unless your cat has got some digestive issue then these expensive top range cat foods are a con

SandraTheBee · 14/10/2018 15:49

Branleuse I did wonder whether that was the case.

SandraTheBee · 14/10/2018 15:51

dementedpixie I reckon I pay just over £20 for 4kg.

I haven't cat a had for years and years. last time I had a cat it seemed so much more simple food-wise. I was completely baffled when I first went food shopping for this one.

I feed mine Applaws dry food, I buy it from Zooplus because it's cheaper. It's grain free and they like it. I think Royal Canin contains grain which isn't good for cats.

Savvylover211 · 14/10/2018 22:31

Vet nurse and mum of 2 cats. I would honestly feed ANY wet food over any dry food not matter the brand. Dry food is a completely inappropriate diet for obligate carnivores.

dementedpixie · 14/10/2018 22:33

Thrive is 90% meat though so I would have thought it was good for carnivores

Pasithea · 14/10/2018 22:36

Find a supplier for raw meat. That’s what cats have evolved to thrive on. It also cuts down on the poo and it doesn’t smell as much.

Wolfiefan · 14/10/2018 22:40

Don’t cats need extra taurine (or something) if they’re on raw?

Fresta · 14/10/2018 22:47

Look on Zooplus for a high meat content dry food- Origen, Nutrivet, Call of the Wild and Purizon are all 70/80 percent meat. Good quality wet food is better for your cat though- try Grau, Macs, Wild Freedom, Feringa, Leonardo ...
