Can we talk about cats before I potentially take my five year old to see one I've seen at the cats protection league. I've been debating one for a while now. I miss my old cat, and I went to the cats protection league yesterday to have a look (big mistake).
Really liked two there.
Felix - 13 years old. (Black and white!) Left there after a separation and the guy said they belonged to his ex wife and he'd always hated them. Black and white. Meows a lot. Pretty friendly but can be grumpy old man.
Stella - 2.5 years old. (Stunning midnight black) Was a stray, says timid but she loved me. Meows a lot and headbumps a lot. Definitely will need brushing a lot too. They think she will be a perfect family cat (and I really liked her!).

My only hesitation. My old cat that my ex kept has never scratched any furniture, messed in the house etc. Do all cats scratch and ruin stuff and be crazy or are some reasonably normal and don't.

I work full time, and can be in and out in the evenings (so no way a kitten works!), however I'd say I'm home in the evenings for around 5 out of 7 nights. And the nights I'm in and out its things like an exercise class. I just think I could offer a cosy quietish home to one in rescue.

I can have a cat flap fitted later on, but the option are access to the whole downstairs or just the small bathroom and passageway. (So if I get a destructive cat I'll be having to limit where they go).

Am I crazy thinking my set up works? I'm responsible enough to understand it doesn't for a kitten but an older cat I'm hoping would be fine.

I'd obviously buy toys/scratch posts, bedding, enrichment toys etc etc.

Eggy sounds adorable and a lot of threads on here are about people looking for cats that are OK with children, as he approached your daughter and was friendly with her I think you should seriously consider him! But if he's OK with other cats then you could see if he and Stella could get on...

Toddlerteaplease · 07/10/2018 22:26

You should get Eggy just because the name is so cute. And if you also get Stella, rename her 'bread'

Broken11Girl · 08/10/2018 01:17

Reading that update I think Stella would be miserable living with an energetic 5yo, and your D Ddisappointed. Voting Eggy Smile

DavetheCat2001 · 08/10/2018 07:01

Eggy! Eggy! Eggy!!

DiveBombingSeagull · 08/10/2018 07:15

Sounds like Eggy has chosen your DD. 😻

Ratbagcatbag · 08/10/2018 11:14

I have just reserved Eggy!! Who needs a new name!!

Yippee, when does he come home?

Ratbagcatbag · 08/10/2018 11:21

I’ve literally just called to get the reserve on him, I’m speaking to them at lunch but I’d suspect Saturday lunch time. My DD goes to her dads at tea time on sat too, so Reggie(!!??!?) can settle in with just me in the house (and I’m off to the cinema on sat evening) so a very calm chilled house for him to start off with!

I’m still wondering if I’m crazy!

You must not change his name. Eggy is an adorable name. (And my cat is called Cheddar!!)

LondonJax · 08/10/2018 12:19

Well done. I'm sure he'll love being with you.

We got a rescue cat two years ago - about 3years old then. She'd given birth in a shed and, judging by the fact that she prefers to sleep on the floor rather than a cosy bed/sofa, she's probably been out most of her life.

When we brought her home she hid on a book case, only coming out for meals or litter tray. We just left her to it but sat on the floor in the room she was in. After a week she began to come up and sit beside us. Within three weeks she had the run of the house and would follow us around.

She now comes to the bottom of the stairs every morning to welcome us one by one as we come down - she has to escort us into the kitchen!

She's never bitten or scratched us. She did start on the furniture even though she had a scratching post (plus a huge cat tree) but we put Feliway spray on it and she now uses the post - no marks on the furniture at all. We also got a plug in Feliway for her for a month as she was a bit skittish for a while.

She has never sat on our laps but will head bump us if we sit on the floor with her - she loves having a hand rested across her head between the ears and a gentle massage around the ear area. You can almost see her smile! So we sit on the floor each night doing cat massages. It's her way, we dance to her tune as she's had the hardest life. It's a small price to pay for having her sit by your side watching TV. Oh and she's a first class football player and very good at batting balls back and forth.

I'm sure you'll have a great life with Eggy (or Reggie). Good luck!

Wolfiefan · 08/10/2018 12:31

No. Not crazy. Yay!!

Broken11Girl · 08/10/2018 12:37

Yay! Grin

Ratbagcatbag · 08/10/2018 13:33

He coming home on Saturday.
I’ll sort pictures once he’s settled.

I think he’s a Reggie, sort of suits him.

I’m trying to think of his full cat title though.

Sir Reginal tibalt something or other 😂😂

Surely he should be Reggy!

agnurse · 09/10/2018 07:02

Him sounds to be good boy. Our Biggie (Mr. Bigglesworth) is similar. The Big doesn't really do much but he is a real cuddle bug. He gives lots of nudges and bunts and likes to lick people, especially his daddy. (We suspect that in the Biggie universe Daddy hung the moon. He practically worships the ground under Daddy's feet.)

This is the big dope drinking water. He usually dips his paw in and licks it off. (He is a little strange. He tried to make friends with a dog once.)

Awwww Agnurse. So cute.

I like that cricket mum. Although we have to have Hampson in there too apparently, according to my daughter. 😂. She wakes up every morning and asks how many sleeps until we get him.
