That’s it basically - went to do her monthly treatment last night and saw flea dirt on fur. We are always very careful about doing the treatment on time so rang vets this morning and they said they had a few people with same experience.
Anyway they gave us something else and I bought some indorex house spray.
Have washed all bedding, sprayed every room. Going to hoover every day and have been brushing her with flea comb.
Is there anything else we should be doing. Should I get pest people in.
Feel horrible thinking fleas in house !

Ive just checked and the replacement one the vet gave us is Bravecto which when you google it has lots of reports of bad side effects ...

The prescription one I use is Advocate - just for the cat who kills & eats things (& fights a bit 🙄) - the other 2 get Advantage.

Have used Stronghold before. Our vets don’t seem to have a strong preference & none of the products are perfect Confused

I once bought a Seresto collar, for the cat that had left home except for food, & kept coming in with ticks. (She decided she hated all the other cats including her sister & was subsequently rehimed as an only cat.) The collars last 7-8 months & are supposed to be very effective, although there is always the risk of it being lost or the cat getting caught on it. You could think about trying one of those?

Thanks Giantkitten - it’s so annoying after doing the treatment from the vets religiously every month but I think we’ve been lucky really - none of our previous cats have ever had fleas.

Have just brushed her again - and lots more flea dirt again. Plus a couple of dead fleas. But no sign of her scratching etc. Just odd that still so much flea dirt after a week.
Will see how this week goes.

I thought the Bravecto side effects were mainly in dogs but I could be wrong.

dahliaaa · 13/10/2018 19:13

That’s reassuring Pink. Now I just need it to work Smile

The only treatment that's worked on our girl is a collar - it's fantastic, just put it on and it's fine for 7 months.

dahliaaa · 13/10/2018 23:31

I think I’ll get a collar as additional cover.

@dahliaaa if you Google any medicine there are side effects. There were two products launched around the same time Lepto 4 and Bravecto both have suffered from a hysterical reaction so much so that the VMD and the FDA have issued statements about the actual incidence of any problem -less than 0.4% in both cases which is actually lower than most other medications. Advocate/advantage actually has a higher incidence of reactions.

GiantKitten · 14/10/2018 11:06

@Lonecatwithkitten

Which is your preferred product, please?

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/10/2018 11:17

My current favourite is Bravecto Plus once every three months Fleas, ticks and roundworms. Then a tape worm treatment every 6-12 months depending on your cats risk factors.
In my practice we have sold ten of thousands of doses of bravecto for cats and dogs and two dogs have vomited once each with it.

GiantKitten · 14/10/2018 12:45

Thank you Smile

My practice hasn’t ever mentioned Bravecto that I can remember. I’ll ask about it next time I go.

dahliaaa · 14/10/2018 14:06

Thanks for that info @lonecatwithkitten

@Lonecatwithkitten is Bravecto Plus a different product? I'd prefer to cut down what we give Harry if possible. What tapeworm product do you recommend? At the moment we use Bravecto and Profender.

Thanks!

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/10/2018 14:23

@PinkSparklyPussyCat yes with the bravecto plus you would only need to use profender once or twice a year.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/10/2018 14:32

Thank you, Harry is due to have his Bravecto next month so I'll ask the vet.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/10/2018 18:56

I phoned the vets today and they are going to order me Bravecto Plus. I'm thinking we should be able to use Profender every 12 months as he doesn't hunt. Hopefully this will mean less chemicals and less upsetting him!

My cat now has broadline/stronghold on alternate months on the advice of the vet ( was on stronghold f9r a year before this). He is a hunter and had picked up tapeworm despite his 6 monthly worming treatment. Apparently stronghold is better for fleas and broadline is better for worms in the area I live although resistance is starting to develop to both. Since he has been on this regime - 6months- there have been no problems and he has never had fleas ( I’ve probably jinxed myself now!)

dahliaaa · 16/10/2018 17:44

That’s interesting ski.
(This is a whole new work to me - I’ve always just paid the vets for the monthly treatments and never had probs before. I just assumed it always worked.)

dahliaaa me too, and all of his flea/ worm treatment has been from the vet without problems before. It was only when I started noticing ‘grains of rice’ in the fur around his back end and googled it that I realised it was tape worm. Went back to the vet for advice and they wormed him again then changed his spot on treatment regimen. I was told resistance is starting to become a problem everywhere but some areas are worse than others for certain things and also for certain cats (eg tapeworm in cats that hunt) so by alternating the treatments they hope to keep things under control -apparently fleas can carry tapeworm eggs (I didn’t know that before). He has never had any sign of fleas so fingers crossed but I’ve been given some provenda tablets just in case he shows signs of tapeworm again before his next check up - so far he seems to be clear of both.

dahliaaa · 16/10/2018 22:51

Thanks Ski (I’m keeping all this info for future !)
