Hypoallergenic cats?

Hello. Does anyone have any experience with hypoallergenic cats? Are they really? I'm not talking about little bald guys, but for example Russian blue? They are beautiful, and might do the job for my allergic but desperate dd - but they are hugely expensive and I don't want to fork out if it doesn't really help.
Dd has lots of anxieties and I'm really hoping a lovely pet will help.

Grateful for any advice/experiences.
Thank you!

Someone told me that long haired Persians are fairly hypoallergenic. They certainly don't produce as much dander and when they do shed, it's easier to remove as it clumps.

I've heard that no cat is actually hypoallergenic and it can depend on the cat. Would your DD be able to go to a rescue to see how she reacts around different cats?

WLmum · 06/10/2018 15:11

Thanks for your responses. Interesting about long hairs - is assumed they'd be worse so a good shout to check out.
I presume a rescue centre would have Heinz 57 moggies rather than particular breeds? Not sure if we'd be able to isolate which cats we'd seen? Something to consider though so thanks.

We originally got our Devon Rex because they are a low allergen breed and my DS was allergic to cats. We went to see the breeder and played with her cats for the afternoon before making a decision.

We subsequently added a moggie (long story).

Interestingly DS no longer appears to be allergic and in fact is the cats favourite human, probably because he lets them slip on his bed and the rest of us don't.

slip=sleep

Must preview!

My husband is allergic when I looked into jt the 2 recommended breeds are balinese and siberian forest. It is advised you check your reaction before getting it.

Narya · 06/10/2018 15:30

A friend of mine had Siberians as her OH was allergic. I think it depends what component of the fur triggers the allergy though. Worth visiting a breeder (as you would anyway before buying a non-rescue cat) a few times and checking for reaction

My husband is very allergic to cats BUT we have always had cats!!
We have had several over the years, none of them have been special breeds, all moggies, and interesting that some have triggered his asthma or hayfever, others not. One poor cat we had to give to my DB, as DH literally had to put himself to bed when he came home from work as he couldn't breathe in the house. Worst reaction ever, and that cat was part Balinese who are supposed to be anti-allergy. But then our next cat, bog standard tabby, no reaction at all. Personally I think it is a bit of a lottery, and luck. We have had long and short haired, part this, part that. We now have a 1/4 Bengal, and DH has no reaction to him at all, not even sneezing. Could be luck, or could be that he has slowly become more immune.

redsummershoes · 06/10/2018 15:41

tbh I wouldn't risk it.
if it turn out cat is no suitable for your dc then it would be unfair on all of you, including the cat, if you have to rehome.

plus with cats it's mainly the dander & saliva particles that cause the reaction. very difficult to clean.

DP is massively allergic, but we've discovered he's considerably less so to our Savannahs. They have fairly unique fur and don't seem to moult at all. And he's the most allergic person I've ever met!

WLmum · 07/10/2018 20:57

Ooh never heard of Savannahs - will check them out. Thanks!
