15 week old kitten with upper respiratory infection - hand hold please

Hi there. Hoping you can offer some advice or help please. We rehomed two shelter kittens this weekend - one is 10 weeks old and typical firecracker kitten. The other (they're not related) is 15 weeks old and she's very nonchalant and reserved. The day after we brought her home, she's come down with a cat cold (URI). Took her back to the shelter, which is also a vet and we got some antibiotics and probiotics for her.

She still seems to be sneezing all the time, runny eyes and nose, and she has been sleeping with her mouth open. This is day 3 of antibiotics. I'm just wondering, when do the meds kick in, and how long can we anticipate her being so poorly?

I feel so deeply sad for her, as she's not playful at all, she just sleeps and eats, she won't sit on us or let us love her.: all we want to do is love her! But she seems so uninterested. She might just be naturally reserved in her nature, but also wondering if it's the URI, or if it could be cause she's left her mummy cat at the shelter.

Any advice would be so appreciated.
Oh! One more question - cat milk (from sainsbury's) ITts a treat right and should only be given say once a day - is that right or totally wrong?

Cat milk is a treat definitely. We sometimes give it to our old boy who sometimes struggles to eat.

I'm sorry the kitten is ill. I think gentle kindness is best but if you feel she isn't responding call the vet for advice.

Poor girl, she must feel rotten. Their strong little buggers though.

I would just keep her warm in a dark room and let her sleep through it. One of ours had a reaction to the flu jab and was very ill, my mum kept her in a dark room. When she didn't improve the breeder took her back to go back with mum who luckily remembered her and took over.

We took the mum in a year later and they hated each other!.

It's a long time ago but our old girl had some sort of cold within a few weeks of getting her. Can't remember the treatment, but she was fine though.

My understanding is that ABs start to kick in after 24 hours, so I'd be expecting a slight improvement with 48 hours. If she had an infection for the ABs and really isn't any better tomorrow, I'd phone the vet and ask if another lots of ABs can be administered

One of mine gets URTI's all the time. Not helped by her flat face. She usually gets given a long lasting antibiotic for conjunctivitis and any bacterial infection. She usually perks up quite quickly. Although she's never actually unwell with it.

Thank you everyone ever so much. Just feel helpless. I don't suppose it helps that I had to wash her down as she has a poo bum and legs earlier too. Poor kitten.

Poor little thing. She's only a little soul. She might take a little longer to bounce back. My 6 year old was very poorly when I found her at 4 weeks old. I kept her in a dark room, in a lovely warm box, padded with a pillow and covered her with a fleece and put a little water bottle in with her. She had a few health probs, but she pulled through and is a sweet middle aged lady now. Hope she feels better soon.

I think we've taken a turner for the better! She's now coughing quite a bit which is so sad, and she's still really shy, but not scared of us. Thanks everyone for the advice.

She needs to cough up all the muck off her little chest. When is she due back at the vets?

We have a 5 year old cat with URTI. He had cat flu as a kitten and it never really goes away. Lots of sneezing and way too much snot but he’s a happy little soul. He’s not as big as his brother and he has a squashed face. As long as you can afford the vet bills, it’s totally manageable. I console myself with the fact that someone else might have taken our cats (abandoned on a doorstep at 2 weeks old) and has Brian PTS because of his nose

She's back at the vets a week today for a booster and check.
We've had her just a week now (she was abandoned in a dustbin) and for the first time today, she has sat on my lap and enjoyed a right good neck scratch - has my first purr too. She's also asleep on me - major breakthrough! Finally letting me love her. Things are looking up Smile
