Currently using Pets at Home ultra performance clumping litter and it's absolutely foul stuff, clings to the tray like old weetabix and just as impossible to remove. What on earth can I use instead, it's a minefield! And do cats take to new kinds of litter or is it like food and you have to change bit by bit? What's the best type of litter to use?

Our cat refuses to use certain litter types, so be wary of that if you change it. She may just be being a princess though. Which she is generally

An alternative is buying liner bags - pop them in under the litter and you empty the whole tray by picking the whole bag of it up, tie it together and put in bin. Downside is that it costs more to buy these AND the litter, but they're not that expensive generally speaking. I even saw some in Poundland the other day (don't know about quality!)

Had a thought after I posted!! Why not get an old tray and test different types?! That way you can see what works for you - but if dcat doesn't like it, she'll use the other one instead of pooping on the floor like ours did Grin

I use one from Morrison’s. It’s recycled wood and absorbs everything. My cat has never bothered if I’ve changed it but the clay stuff was horrible. When it’s absorbed as much as it can the rest of the pee just sits on top so she has paws covered in pee and leaves clay foot prints everywhere plus it sticks to the tray like cement. Definitely go with the wood stuff!

I bought a new litter tray yesterday, I managed to break the one I had Hmm. So a clean slate. I'm going to try liners and see if I can move them onto wood pellets. Nothing can be as revolting as the clay stuff.
Thanks!

I like the wood pellets - do end up with sawdust around the tray but easy enough to sweep up. I do a full change once it's pretty much completely saw dust.
I like the idea of liners but they don't work for us in practice - our cats shred them when they're trying to cover up after themselves - plus one of mine is prone to err...sloppier poos...and it was all getting smeared all over the liner 🤢

Inter sand classic is brilliant. Lasts ages.

We used liners and then I realised how bad they are for then environment. We changed to a clumping litter which goes in a biodegradable bag and into the bin. We use Felipure litter but I've only seen that in Pets Corner.

Rockbird · 06/10/2018 14:18

I take the point about the liners, I'm justifying it to myself because we're still very much finding our feet after only two weeks as cat owners. Once I know what I'm doing a bit more then I'll ditch them. It's all trial and error I guess.

I'm not criticising! I visited a turtle rescue in Florida last year and it made me think. We also found they worked sometimes but others he got a bit carried away and ripped the liner so it defeated the object.

We've found with the clumping litter that it needs to be really deep in the tray. We also changed to a tray with a rim, which has prevented him from weeing up the side of the tray so it's much easier to scoop.

MrsChollySawcutt · 06/10/2018 14:40

We use Sivocat Blue Signal, it's the best clumping litter we have found.

I'd beware switching to a paper/sawdust pellet litter if your cats are used to a fine grained clumping litter. It's very different under paw and they may protest.

I'd used paper pellet litter for years but had to give it up when we bought in new kittens as companions for our older cat. They were used to clumping litter and refused to change.

Oh I know Sparkly Smile

Maybe I'm not putting enough in. It's sticking like glue and meaning I have to do an almost complete change every day. I've got some still to use so I'll see if a deeper layer makes a difference. If not I'll look at your suggestions to see what might suit the little beggars

Our boy goes out so doesn't use the tray so much. He does like to come home for a poo though...
We use Catsan with a built in liner and a drawstring bag which fits over the tray, absorbs liquid and is easy to remove so nothing gets stuck to the tray. Always found Catsan doesn't smell and the thick liner is good. ZooPlus do it cheapest. We have a swanky wooden frame for the tray as His Catness likes to perch his front paws on the edge and overturned it a few times and this frame keeps kicked out litter to a minimum.

GiantKitten · 10/10/2018 05:02

I tried plastic liners once and they got shredded 🙄

Cats Best really is the best IMO - not wood pellet, though it has a nice clean woody smell.

It is expensive BUT lasts way longer than cheaper litter. You need to put a lot in (2-3” deep) but wee magically forms into sort of snowballs, which are large & easy to scoop but somehow remove hardly any of the litter you put in.

Also it never smells. Also you can flush the snowballs down the loo (need to break them up first though. I scoop into dogpoo bags first)

One fill lasts literally weeks, & once most of what’s left has turned to dust it can be composted after the last scooping.

It does track a bit. I’ve got these mats which help with that

EachandEveryone · 10/10/2018 11:53

I like the Catsan all in one for their normal box and Sainsbury’s own for their posh box.

JeanPagett · 10/10/2018 12:24

Another one using Catsan here. I'm a bit jealous liners are working for you, like others our cat just shreds them.
