Collar rubbing

Dcat lost her collar a few months ago (happens every so often). I have just noticed that her replacement one has rubbed the fur off. It is not sore, just furless.

She needs a light-reflecting collar as she is a black cat and likes to go wandering round and about.

Any ideas what I can do to make sure it gets better and not worse?

I also have a black cat with bald neck syndrome!
He likes to scratch at it and turn it round and round, so it rubs the fur off.
He's now around twenty, and is still going, so I think your cat will survive! Smile

I also have a black cat who is prone to a bald neck!! Light reflecting ones seem to make it worse. I just try to let him have lots of time with the collar off when he’s indoors and I check often to see if it is sore or red. I’ve had to switch collars a few times when it’s got a bit scabby.

Cats should be in when it’s dark anyway and collars are a risk.

I think that’s just what happens to many cats. I like the way, with our cat, that if she were to lose her collar it’s obvious she did have one on at some point, so isn’t a stray.

If a cat is picked up as a stray they should check for a microchip. Collars are a choking, hanging, trapping, leg injury risk. (Yes even the quick release ones)

I'm not a collar fan, injuries from them can be pretty awful, and I'm pretty sure thecatneuterer has said before that a lost/abandoned/stray collared cat is less likely to get help as people assume it has an owner.

Get rid of the collar and keep your cat in at night.

BeBesideTheSea · 07/10/2018 19:44

Cat doesn’t go out at night. But she gets let out when we get home from school - and in winter it is dark. Would those of you being so judgmental rather she never went out at all? She would be unhappy. You might be willing to make my cat so unhappy; I am not.

I want the collar for light reflecting, not worried about her being picked up as a stray - she is microchipped.

You need to keep the cat in when it’s dark. Especially with fireworks about soon.
Microchip cat flap set to shut cat in once it’s dark?
Or cat proof garden?

No

Well then your cat is at an increased risk of accident or injury. But hey. As long as she doesn’t have a bald patch?! Confused
