We have a little 15 week old long haired kitten that we have had for four weeks and are completely in love with her. My question is, how much of her personality will change as she grows? She is so affectionate and loves cuddles, a real lap cat. Did I hit the jackpot when I chose her and will she be like this as an adult?

Don't think you've had any replies because :

  1. You've committed cardinal sin of not posting a picture, and
  2. We're all jealous!

Oh yes, we need pictures!

My cats personalities have remained consistent since they were young kittens.

Cat 1 is rather aloof but asks for occasional lap time. He was always a very independent, confident kitten and is the same as an adult.

Cat 2 accepts strokes on her terms only/rarely asks for a lap. She made it clear as a kitten that she didn't like being handled much/picked up and still doesn't. She's a fiesty tortoiseshell princess!

Cat 3 is the ultimate lap cat (actually, he thinks he's a dog, he's extremely loyal/attached and comes sprinting down the garden for strokes and cuddles when I get home from work and call him). He's been known to actively beg for affection and will sit meowing until a lap is made available. When he wakes up from a nap and sets eyes on you, he chirrups a an affectionate greeting. Again, this personality trait shone through when he was a kitten.

So, to sum up (oops, I seem unable to resist talking about my own cats Grin) I'd say you've hit the jackpot and have a lap cat for life, enjoy! Smile

Thanks for the replies! Oh I hope she stays as she is. We have an older cat who we got as a kitten and she doesn't particularly like people, I can't remember what she was like when she was little. So pleased that she may continue to enjoy snuggles. Need to teach her to not scratch the sofa though!!! I've attached a couple of pictures Smile

Yes the likelihood is that these traits will go through to adulthood especially if they are encouraged.

My now old lady was a cuddle monster from the the day she came home and it never stopped, she was a real lap cat and face rubber. She was still ok on her own too but loved a cuddle and my fat lap! She liked to play with dp but I was deemed to precious to play with and was reserved for intense affection.

She was like a dog in that if the door went she would run to the person coming home to say hello and get a cuddle and tell them she missed them!

She is now what I call aggressively affectionate Smile she will follow, yowl and force her way on to me. She barges into the bathroom and insists loudly I stroke her while I'm sitting on the toilet and at bed time she properly run to the bed and screams at me until I cuddle her then she calms down for night time. If your busy she will settle down but grabs the chance if she can.

That sounds bad but she's old and quite ill now so I think it's just because she needs to know that there's always going to be comfort that she and we are still ok. Sort of like when a child's is worried or ill they can get a bit clingy.

Just incase you wanted to see her Blush

The white on her is actually undercoat because she'd been shaved again for blood tests

Oh! What a little beauty!

Poppins2016 · 30/09/2018 12:41

Oh she is beautiful, @PickledWilly

One of the vets at the practice I use loves black cats (he told me this when I was there for a check up with Cat 3, my cuddle monster, who is a black cat). Apparently black cats are the consistently the soppiest and most affectionate. I'm unsure as to whether there's any scientific evidence (surely colour can't dictate personality?!), but anecdotally I have to say that this seems to be true...

Poppins2016 · 30/09/2018 12:43

@Ginkypig, your old lady is gorgeous too. I love the 'aggressive affection' description... I sometimes joke with Cat 3 that he's trying to 'kill me with love', especially when he winds himself around my legs as I'm walking downstairs... Not without some force, I must say! Perhaps it's a conspiracy... Grin

Ours is now 3 and has the same cuddly soppy personality as when he was tiny! He's just massive now!

Sorry Poppins not popping

I've had a few cats and the way that they behaved as a kitten was a strong indication of how they behaved later on.
My affectionate kitten stayed affectionate with everyone. The one that protested at my cold hands when I picked him up turned out to be quite aloof. The ninja style kitten continued to dive bomb us well into his geriatric years!

PickledWilly · 30/09/2018 22:28

Lovely stories, thanks so much for sharing them. Really hoping she will continue to be so affectionate as she is a little darling
