Tonkinese, Somali, or moggie?

buckingfrolicks · 28/09/2018 00:40

I want a rescue cat. Previous rescues were moggies and very lovely. But omg those breeds -Tonkinese and Somali - are beautiful.

But are they too full on??

I love all cats but as I live alone I'd like a chatty cat who will sleep with me and who is ok being alone for part of the day. Any cat will have access to a garden.

Or should I get a black moggie as they are hardest to regime?

Hardest to rehome

You can have cheddar, she's a persian exotic. She is very chatty and likes to wake me up for fuss and making biscuits at 4am every morning. She sleeps on the bed. And is very cuddly!

Moggy every time.
My two latest rescue kittens are black, very talkative, sleep on the bed (and sometimes play the piano in the wee small hours of the morning).
They seem to fit your requirement Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/09/2018 13:34

A moggy definitely (although Cheddar is gorgeous!) and even better if you get a black moggie.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/09/2018 14:18

There's breed rescue websites. Avoid any breed described as loud or vocal.

Wolfiefan · 28/09/2018 14:21

If you live alone and work full time then avoid any breed that demands human attention.

viccat · 28/09/2018 14:40

I wouldn't let a pedigree (or pedigree looking) cat to have free outdoor access - they are at high risk of being stolen, and not usually that streetwise anyway.

If you live alone, you are ideally placed to adopt a rescue moggie that's maybe been overlooked because they need a quiet adult-only home without other pets.

PingusPaws · 28/09/2018 16:33

Ahh, black moggies are a thing of beauty. It saddens me when I read they are the most difficult to rehome. Due to a nonsense superstition.

My grandmother was a vet, who looked after and cared for all of her patients equally, but had a fondness for black cats and kittens, who would regularly be abandoned at the top of her drive/practice.

They really are a sweet natured and gentle little pet, when given the chance :)

Toddlerteaplease · 28/09/2018 20:44

Black cats are the best. I mean, why wouldn't you want a mini panther.

TheNavigator · 29/09/2018 09:19

Rescue moggy - whenever I have got a kitten I have been overwhelmed by the huge number of kittens needing homed in our local cat shelter (in 2 different cities). I would never buy from a breeder when there are so many adorable balls of fluff in cat shelters that need a lovely forever home.

Orangelover · 29/09/2018 13:28

Get a little moggy that nobody wants and he'll love you forever Grin

Black cats are fabulous. I’ve always had them, rehomed rescues. Some have started off timid and with care and patience all have ended up soft as butter.

I love the looks of oriental breeds and have toyed with the idea of having one but in reality would never do it, for so many reasons.

Rescue centres are overrun with cats and kittens desperate for homes, I couldn’t overlook those for an animal specifically bred for commercial gain or to fulfil an aesthetic need.

The risk of that ‘designer’ animal being stolen or harmed is high and so it would probably have to be kept as an indoor cat. I couldn’t do that. It’s different doing that if there is a reason that the cat cannot go outside for its own well-being (eg a disability or illness). However, to shut an animal, which naturally wants to have a territory, roam & hunt, indoors for the owner’s peace of mind seems unfair on the animal.

Always moggie. Friends have had fancy cats, I can think of nine in the persian/siamese/scottish fold/smushed face lines and without exception they've been crap. Mental, noisy, self-harming, 90% sleeping, furniture destroying, dying of various things at way too young, needing medical attention for breathing/walking.... or all of the above at once!

Country farm kittens and rescue cats for us, every time.

ScreamingValenta · 29/09/2018 13:52

Go and visit some rescue cats and see which one you fall in love with. I have always known when I have found 'the one' - I can sense which cat I will be the right slave owner for.

SilverHairedCat · 29/09/2018 13:55

Moggy. Your cat will pick you anyway. The resident silver haired cat walked all over me when I was introduced to a number of cats. She chose me, rather than me getting to choose her!

CoffeeShortbread · 29/09/2018 13:56

Yes, brachycephalic breeds like Persians (anything with a squashed skull/face) is likely to suffer from respiratory issues. Same as dogs (pugs, French bulldogs etc).

Ginkypig · 29/09/2018 14:15

All pedigree cats Iv known have been either had varying degrees of mental, had zero interest in humans, destructive or succumbed to health issues and died young. Or a combination of all of the above.

I'm not saying don't get one but equally there are thousands of beautiful, loving cats in rescues with no particular breed who would make you a perfect companion.

I rescued my girl (black moggy) she has been the most good natured, affectionate and well behaved cat Iv ever known. She's slightly shy around strangers in that she won't get on their laps, she still says hello and doesn't hide though but that's because she's not grown up In a busy house with lots of visitors or kids etc.

tierraJ · 02/10/2018 20:54

My old black fluffy rescue cat Millie... was a moggy but looked like a pedigree

Tonkinese, Somali, or moggie?
Chewbecca · 02/10/2018 22:23

I have a tonkinese who is very friendly, chatty, demanding and loving. Always on my lap as soon as I sit down.

I do let her out, she loves flying about the garden. I'm not keen on keeping cats indoors when they want to be out.

Want2beme · 02/10/2018 23:40

I have a very chatty longhaired black moggie. She is bossy, excitable, loves a cuddle but has quite an independent streak as well. I have been her slave for a couple of years, after she turned up and claimed bed and board Grin

buckingfrolicks · 10/10/2018 19:19

I've decided. Moggy. Can't wait. I should be installed in my new house end of the month.

Now, the only remaining question is one or two!

OP posts:
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/10/2018 19:26

Two - without a doubt. Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 10/10/2018 20:39

Definitely two. Twice the fun and once you've bought all the stuff for one, another costs little. And pairs maybe more difficult to regime.

EachandEveryone · 11/10/2018 10:49

Two!
