House viewings with 5 months old kitten

Due to a break up we decided to sell the house, but unfortunately I have a kitten which has thrown up a lot of problems with house viewings. He's spent the last few weeks staying with a friend, but it's not sustainable so I'm bringing him home this weekend or next. Unfortunately, we're still not sold and viewings continue. My main concern is him escaping the house while people are there/opening and closing the doors etc, so I know I can restrict viewings to when I'm there, and in the meantime teach him how to use the cat flap and show him the front as well so he understands where he lives and how to get home. Is this the right thing, is he too young to go out? I can't shut him in a room cause he's too big now, the downstairs is open plan too so I can't just shut him out of the kitchen, and I can't shut him in an area away from the front door cause of the way the house is laid out. Any suggestions? Anyone had a similar issue? What did you do?

if you are moving soon, i wouldn't let him go outside etc. he will get very confused when you move otherwise. personally, i would get a cat pen : (you can find them on ebay) and put that in a garden or a room. while the open house is happening, pop the kitten into the pen and place a scratching post in there, along with a few toys. make sure it is one with a roof, as otherwise it may be able to escape! all the best x

In a cat a Carrier in the car?

Haberpop · 24/09/2018 16:56

Is there any reason he can't just go in a pet carrier for the duration of the viewing?

LizB62A · 24/09/2018 16:59

is your kitten vaccinated, microchipped and neutered ? (just in case he does manage to escape !)

fenneltea · 24/09/2018 17:07

I wouldn't be letting him out yet no, especially if he hasn't been neutered or chipped. A cat carrier or dog crate would solve the problem for you as others have said. I hope you get a sale soon!

viccat · 24/09/2018 21:19

Don't let him out! A large dog crate would be the safest, or try to arrange viewings "open house" style in a block and take him with you to a friend's temporarily for the duration?

Thekitten · 24/09/2018 22:49

If I'm at home then there's no problem with him being loose in the house cause I'll keep an eye on him and follow him around so no need for a crate in that respect. Not sure you meant for him to be in one all day. I'm more concerned about viewings when I'm at work, which I'll have to put a stop to for now. He's neutered, vaccinated and chipped. An open house is a good idea, I'll speak to the agent about doing that. Thank you! Also not moving anywhere soon at this rate so may have to start introducing him to the outside just in case it takes ages. It took a ten months last time...

We’ve just sold our house and we said viewings only evening and weekend as we have a tiny over excited dog. Don’t trust people not to hang around with the front door open. Wasn’t an issue

I viewed a flat that had five Bengal cats and a snake in a tank in the kitchen.

The EA warned about the cats before the viewing and he did good cat protocol with making sure none escaped whilst we did the viewing. So it is possible if you trust the EA for them to do viewings without you.

FYI five Bengal cats in a 600 sq foot flat was not cool.
