Are these vets being a bit OTT?

After having our beautiful seven month old boy kitten desexed, they want to see him for a postop check up on day 3 and also on Day 10?

Is that excessive? He hates going to the vet, and finds it stressful. There are no stitches, he’s right as rain. I’m inclined to just phone them and say that it’s all healed beautifully and ask if we can skip coming in?

(It’s Day 3 today btw)

Our male kitten didn't have to have any checks after his, same as you no stitches.

I would ring them - will you get charged for the check up?

We don't do any post op checks. We just tell people what to look out for (redness/swelling). It seems a bit OTT.

ifonly4 · 20/09/2018 11:38

Maybe it seems OTT, but at least it shows the vets are caring and supportive. My girl was older when she had her dental but two follows up were included in the fee.

StrawberryFilter · 20/09/2018 12:06

I'm glad to hear it's not the norm! Of course am keeping an eye on him for redness/swelling/discharge. But it's all healed up as far as I can tell.

There are some very wealthy homes around here and I think there's some people happy to have very expensive and high maintenance pet care.... which is fine but in this case I'd really rather not.

Our vets do but the check ups aren't extra. Our cats have been neutered when we adopted them so not gone through it all.
In your case I would definitely call and see what they say.

villainousbroodmare · 20/09/2018 12:36

3 day and 10 day checks are standard for all ops and are almost certainly included in the price. They can be v important following some operations, and the 10d one often involves suture removal but in the case of tomcat castration it is a bit OTT and there are no sutures. I think the practice is just applying the same post-op policy across the board.

dementedpixie · 20/09/2018 12:40

My 2 boys didn't go back for checks after neutering.

MrsMozart · 20/09/2018 12:45

Ours have all had checks and it's been included in the op price.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 20/09/2018 12:48

I'd say it is pretty over the top. If he doesn't like going to the vets why add in the stress of 2 visits which are not necessary. I think your plan to call and confirm he is ok is more than enough.

I paid £180 for a post op check at a very posh veterinary hospital, it lasted five minutes. ( an hour and a half away) Fatty refused to open her mouth and climbed straight back into her basket! I said she's fine and that was that!

StrawberryFilter · 20/09/2018 15:37

Yes I can see the value in the case of other ops where sutures are involved etc, but I’m getting a consensus here that it might be overkill for male cat desexing.

Follow ups were included in the price but I’m making the executive decision to spare him any further trauma Smile

Toddlertea I must be in the wrong practice! Grin Wow. Did Fatty's insurance cover that?

Toddlerteaplease · 20/09/2018 16:41

Yes fortunately it did. The bill was £5000! Personally I think she was just trying to compete with her sister who'd also run up a £5000 bill two months previously! The hospital was very posh though. And had a free coffee machine!

Itsatravesty · 20/09/2018 16:47

3 and 10 days post op checks standard for most ops in all the vets I've worked in (and free of charge), except for cat castrates, they really don't need to be seen unless you have concerns.
