Cat's eye showing white but at bottom towards outer corner not inner

I've just got in and noticed my 3 year old black Tom cat has a bit of white showing at the bottom of one eye, like his third eyelid but not in the inner corner of the eye, more at the bottom and towards the outer corner if that makes sense? He's washing it a bit but has eaten and seems ok. I'd take him to the vets tomorrow but I'm in hospital frim early morning for day surgery and there no one else to take him apart from my 17 year old daughter who can't drive. I dont know how I'm going to feel Friday either.

Can someone reassure me that it'll probably be ok til Monday? Or do I need an emergency appointment.. which I can't afford as I have £45 til Friday?

Please don't attack me, I look after my cats very well and am always straight to the vets if something's wrong, but this is awful timing Sad

TIA

I’m sorry but I’m finding it hard to understand what you mean - could it just be the whites of his eyes? Is there any discharge from the eye? Perhaps if you are able to post a photo we could give some advice?

Itsmeaga1n · 19/09/2018 17:43

He won't keep still Blush

It's as if either the bottom lid is swollen ... or his third eyelid is showing. It's a very thin strip of white showing at the bottom of his eye.

I'll try and get a photo ...

It all come at once. The vet may see him now before the close of surgery if you phone. Otherwise, if you're happy with him make sure there's enough money in the house for your DD to get a taxi, so he can at least be checked out and perhaps given something like ABs as a precaution.

sorry, meant to say not happy with him!

They never see you straight away because they're a 24 hour surgery, so will suggest an out of hours appointment at £80 Sad

I know you've got a lot on and need to prepare for tomorrow, but I'd get him seen. If it really can't be done tonight, then your DD will have to take him in a taxi tomorrow. Not saying your DD will moan, but I've got a 17 year old DD and she'd just have to do it.

Sorry, just read you're short of money at the moment. Could a neighbour, friend take help with transport?

Lindy2 · 19/09/2018 18:01

If he's well in himself perhaps you can see how it is tonorrow morning. He may have got something in it that has irritated it a bit but it doesn't seem to have any discharge.
You might be able to decide then if it is urgent or can wait.
I hope he is ok soon and it's nothing too serious.

eddiemairswife · 19/09/2018 18:07

I wouldn't worry if he is behaving and eating normally.

Jammiebammie · 19/09/2018 18:27

Oh bless him, it looks a little weepy but it doesn’t look infected. He could have caught it on something or had it scratched by another cat.
I’d personally want to take him tomorrow, it could possibly wait a couple of days but then runs the risk of an infection developing. I’d definitely wait and see how it looks in the morning though.
My vet has also let me drop payment in a few days later if I haven’t had my card on me, you could ask if yours would let you do this.
Hope tomorrow goes well for you and that you’re ok.

Itsmeaga1n · 19/09/2018 20:20

Thank you. I've booked an appointment for Friday afternoon and hope that I'm ok as I dont think dd will (social anxiety). At the very least i should be ok to drive, it's not far, dd can carry the basket for me.

He's just eaten again so I'm not too worried, although it is a bit weepy.

He doesn't go out at the moment but does play fight with my Siamese so it's possible his eye was caught by a claw I guess. I was just surprised because I thought the third eye lid came across from the inside corner.

It looks like the funk my Persians get. I just wipe it off with my hand. Wipes are unacceptable but hand is fine. Hmm

*gunk

It's it like this?

He's beautiful! 😍😍😍

But no, it's part of his eye, either his third eye lid or his actual eye lid, I think.

I'm leaving my daughter with instructions to go to the vet if she's worried when she gets in from school - after messaging me to check first.

I'd make a saline solution up and bathe the eye first. Often clears up minor eye irritations without a visit to the vet.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/09/2018 08:13

Good luck with your op.

Itsmeaga1n · 20/09/2018 08:40

Thanks. I'll be glad when it's over!

He still seems happy enough today but I'll try the saline solution - normal salt?

OP posts:
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 20/09/2018 08:45

Yes - boil a mug of water, dissolve a teaspoon of household salt in it, cool it until it's tepid and then use.

Itsmeaga1n · 20/09/2018 08:58

Thanks.

His eye looks much better today but he was subdued so i still took him to the vets and I'm glad I did: his temperature was 39.9 and he probably has an infection. They gave him antibiotics and anti-inflammatory injections. He's perked up since, eating lots and not sleeping so much. Poor fella! I've to take him back tomorrow to check his temperature is down.
