New cat got out of the house

We have a new (ish) cat who we've had for maybe three months. She hasn't been out of the house before but lives in the house with our other cat who goes out pretty regularly (no cat flap though - we just let her in and out).

We went on holiday for a week and I think in the chaos of leaving the house to go on holiday (had friends staying over and leaving with us) the door must have been left open and both cats got out. We had a cat sitter so thought everything was fine although in hindsight the cat sitter was very cagey about the status of the cats. When we got back home after a week away our old cat came rushing up to greet us and be let into the house. There was no evidence that any of the food left down for them had been touched and the litter trays were as spotless as when we left so I think they were both outside for the whole time we were away.

The old cat we've had since she was a baby so she was waiting for us and very happy to see us but the new one is nowhere to be seen. She's not been outside before, doesn't know us that well etc. I'm so worried about her! People who've been round the house say they've seen her a few times so I really hope she's still here. We looked when we got back but it was midnight so she was probably off and about and then this morning it was raining so I expect she was hiding.

I've left her litter tray and a big bowl of food out (we have other outdoor cats so there's been food down during the week but they tend to be fed at regular meal times and eat it all). Not sure what else I can do except walk around calling her name and shaking her favourite toy..

Sorry for this long and rambly post. I feel like such a bad cat owner. In hindsight I should have checked they were both in the house before we left and also been more pushy with the cat sitter (my FIL's housekeeper whose looked after the cats before and we do trust but I know that she's always very reluctant to say if anything is wrong for fear she'll be blamed).

We asked one of our immediate neighbours last night but it was very late so not many around. This evening we'll go round and speak to the neighbours who live near where she's been seen. Our place backs onto a big piece of overgrown land which is where she was seen so I hope she's made a home in there.

I'll look into getting a chip activated cat flap as well. We didn't get one originally because I didn't want them bringing birds etc. Into the house but now I've changed my mind!

She's such a loving and friendly cat Sad

Three months is a long time to have had a cat. She will definitely consider your house to be home. Is she chipped? I'm assuming she's neutered?

The problem here is that you don't know how long she's been missing. It's vital to leave food outside the house when a new cat goes missing, and that should be done from day one and continue to be done for many weeks if necessary. If that wasn't done from the start then she may have gone further afield trying to find food.

It's still necessary to start doing it though. Also of course knock on neighbours' doors. Ask them to check sheds and garages. Also do posters and leaflet a wide area.

Has the cat sitter seen her? Has she been in the house at all during the week? Poor baby - she looks quite young.

I assume from your post you live in a rural setting. Are there many neighbours - maybe on has adopted her not knowing she has an owner.

I think you need to have a proper chat with the cat sitter. Presumably food and litter boxes would have been ok if a cat sitter was visiting so that's not necessarily evidence both cats were out? If they were, then cat sitter has obviously done a terrible job...

I'm also confused why you think new cat doesn't know you well after 3 months? Was she very shy to start with? 3 months is plenty of time to bond to a home and family.

She was waiting for me when I got home from work! I don't know why I thought she wouldn't know me well after three months. I guess cause when I got her from the shelter she was so loving and friendly I thought that was just her personality with everyone and she had no special affection to me but turns out she does.

The housekeepers standard of work is a whole other issue!

What a lovely update

Hurray - good news! You must feel so relieved!

I'm so pleased! I went out to feed the outdoor cats when I got back from work and she immediately appeared. I guess she'd been sharing their food while we were gone. A little dirty but none the worse for wear.
