I have had enough and need litter suggestions

Our current litter is crap, so I am looking for suggestions of litter I can get from Asda Tesco or pets at home (so I can buy today)

I am wondering about going for crystals again, but last time I offer one tray of it. The cats ignored it and used the other trays. If I fill all trays they might try it ? or just poo next to the tray in protest, lol

I have 2 inside/outside older medium sized short hair altered boy cats and currently have three simple open trays with cheap Asda litter which has started to stick and smell more, requiring me to the wash trays three times a week instead of once.

Both cats have been to the vets recently, so I don't think the stink is illness related, just bad litter choice.

I might go back to Catsan but the perfume puts me off.

I have never tried wood pellets, are they worth trying and how do the cats dig in it ?

Looking for suggestions.

I’m going to be unhelpfully helpful and suggest one from Kennelgate..

www.kennelgate.co.uk/item/Intersand/Intersand-City-Classic-Clumping-Cat-Litter-Baby-Powder-Scent-14kg/GQW

It’s £15 BUT it lasts me a month, sometimes longer and I have 3 cats, 1 indoor and 2 outdoor. The smell is almost non existent (both of the poo and the litter scent itself). It’s clumping, but doesn’t clump like cement so easy to clean out. It tracks a little bit, but only just outside the trays so doesn’t get around the house either.

I would really recommend trying it out when you have time to get to Kennelgate, or order online. They have a smaller bag for £8

A lot of people recommend wood pellets though. My first cat was trained with them but she went off it after a while. I’d just pick up a Catsan one today if it’s done the job previously, and try the Intersand one when you get a chance.

The best solution I found when I have needed litter trays in the past was the wood pellets. I lined the tray with newspaper, put 1 cup of the pellets in only. This made it really easy to clean after each use, just wrap it up in the paper & discard. The trays stay clean and you use much less litter. As you are cleaning it immediately there's no residual smell. My cats were fine with this system.

Chrisinthemorning · 16/09/2018 07:50

Cats best okoplus.

friendshipfloss · 16/09/2018 07:52

You can also get the big boxes of puppy training mats & use those to line the tray which works very well.

AnnaMagnani · 16/09/2018 08:01

OK so you can't buy it today from Asda.

But Cats best from Zooplus. In massive 10kg bags that they helpfully deliver for you so you don't have to lug it home yourself.

If you can afford it, in Modkats (we built up our collection slowly).

So little fuss, no smell, no litter being kicked everywhere, takes ages before it all needs changing.

WinkysTeatowel · 16/09/2018 08:12

I have just switched to the Lightweight litter from Aldi, we've used Sanicat for years and years and thought it was best but have been really impressed with the ALDI one, including the price.

Definitely worth investing in a hooded tray in my opinion though. I think if you're switching the litter texture I think the advice is to mix it at first.

StuntNun · 16/09/2018 08:14

I tried a few different types of litter for my cats but now they use a clay clumping litter - this one from Zooplus. It's low dust so hardly any comes out of the litter tray. It lasts for absolutely ages, I have two cats and easily get a month out of half a bag. I put lots in the tray so that the wee doesn't reach the bottom of the tray and it's easy to scoop out the clumps every day.

If your cats ignored the new litter last time then try putting the new stuff (whichever you choose) on the bottom of the tray with a layer of their usual litter on top so they have the familiar litter while they get used to the new one.

If it's really stinky then it could be diet related. I switched my cats from Whiskas to a grain-free cat food (again from Zooplus this one that still works out cheaper than buying from the supermarket.) That has reduced the smell of the litter tray to almost nothing.

Lauren83 · 16/09/2018 08:21

I second cats best I have 6 cats and it's by far the best I have used, it clumps really easy so you can lift the lumps out and doesn't smell and you rarely have to do a full empty and clean. I spend about £50 a time on it and get it delivered but it lasts ages

Sotiredallthetime · 16/09/2018 08:23

Thanks for the quick response, loads of options to look into :)

Think I will try Oxoplus Litter and grain free food from Pets at home today and look to order next batch online if it works.

Thanks

I third the Oko Plus cats best. I get if from Zooplus too. Pets at Home may stock it. Our old girl had IBD so poos could be erm potent and it did help contain the odour.

Sotiredallthetime · 16/09/2018 08:42

Ahh the vets think our cat could have IBD, he is on anti inflammatories atm, maybe it is him then !

Right will try Cats at home, or order online otherwise.

I always got it from Zooplus too but have found it cheaper on eBay in the past, my 6 have their beds and scratch posts etc in the conservatory as they sleep in there with a cat flap to the garden but it used to smell and it was always tracking everywhere so I was always sweeping, they have an outdoor tray only now it's a huge hooded one that's watertight and they use that in the garden so there's no smell and no sweeping, if the weathers really bad though I bring it in

Lauren83 · 16/09/2018 08:45

That's the tray they have outside now

@POPholditdown I was about to suggest the same thing. It's brilliant. Two indoor cats. Scoop once daily and full change once a month. The non scented one is available on zooplus.

Sotiredallthetime · 16/09/2018 14:31

Right, I am now penniless but I have replaced the three old litter trays with these three.

Two cheap basic trays and one super filtering tray. If the filtering tray works I will get another next payday.

Plus a big sack of Okoplus litter ! It filled these three trays (pictured) and I have another refill for all three trays left over.

So I moved the filled trays into the back utility room, replacing the old trays and I am waiting to see if the cats will use them. Nice fluffy, soft and light litter, so I hope they will like it.

If it doesn't work, I will try the clay one mentioned further up thread.

Thanks for all the advice :)

I use wood pellet, as a pp said you don't fill as much and it leaves the tray clean.
I did switch last year to top loading trays.
That was a big improvement, especially the tracking.

Itsmeaga1n · 16/09/2018 14:41

Which filtering tray did you buy? Let us know how you get on?

Sotiredallthetime · 16/09/2018 14:56

This tray

Amusingly there are two reviews for this tray. One 5 star from a customer who lives it and one 1 star from a customer who hated it !

Oko plus is terrible for tracking. I like the oko plus smart pellets as they also clump but track less. Worlds best is also quite good and is also a clumping litter

Sotiredallthetime · 16/09/2018 16:07

I will invest in a litter mat next payday to limited tracking .

EachandEveryone · 16/09/2018 18:58

I got a big one off Amazon prime for a few quid. With my top loading tray they hardly get anything on it though. Mine like Sainsbury’s own brand clumping litter.

Sotiredallthetime · 16/09/2018 21:01

Will check out Amazon for mat :)

I saw a top loader one and thought it hooded brilliant but my boys are old gentlemen and might fall when trying to get in or out. But for younger/middle aged cats they look ace.

One of the cats did a wee in the new litter. Hurrah. One down, one cat to go.

Interestingly the wee caused the litter to inflated like a marshmallow in a small pile ! Weird but easy enough to scoop out.
