Grain free food?

Cat hasn't been with us long from the rescue and is very well within himself - lively, alert, eating and drinking lots - but has persistent wet poo!

I'm taking up all food for 24 hours and have given him pro-kolin, and may then do a few days of just chicken as I've read that will be easy for him to digest, with the aim of giving him his tummy a good rest.

But I'm thinking that I should then try reintroducing him onto a grain free food - he is on Iams at the moment which other cats I've had have always been fine on, but he doesn't seem to be settling on it.

Does anyone have any thoughts, and what grain free foods should I look out for?

I have a cat with tummy problems. I feed him butcher's classic canned food and Applaws dry food, both grain free. He's been much better on them.

I use thrive, purizon and encore dry food and they are all grain free. Purizon is from zooplus and thrive is also from there or from Amazon. I use a mix of wet foods and some are grain free and some not. They don't like pate style so a lot of the better grain free wet foods are out

My ex rescue with IBS is currently on Royal Canin sensitivity control and doing well on it.

dementedpixie · 15/09/2018 19:08

Royal canin is not grain free and doesn't have a lot of meat in it either

Applaws or Purizon

dementedpixie · 15/09/2018 19:10

I've just checked and the first ingredient is rice! Cats are carnivores and don't need rice

I use almost the same as dementedpixie but I find grain free dry food too much like hard work they really don’t like the consistency. I noticed Asda do their own version so I tried that but they weren’t having any of it they are obsessed with savoury cakes by Gourmet or Felix as Good as it looks. No runny tums for ages now.

dementedpixie · 15/09/2018 19:15

Thrive dry is 90% meat
Encore dry is 80% meat
Purizon dry is 70% meat

I give a mix of the above

EachandEveryone · 15/09/2018 19:23

Exactly what I use. The Encore generally if I need to buy from the supermarket. I can’t get them onto grainfree wet. Occasionally Sainsbury’s but they have to be in the right mood.

Thanks all that's really helpful!! I'll pick up a bag of encore then probably if that's what is easiest to get in the supermarket and see how he goes on that.
It amazes me how low the meat content is in some of the brands!!

After the myriad of issues our old girl had we're giving our young lad a grain free diet. He has Thrive wet and dry. Lily's kitchen is grain free and easy to get in supermarkets. Avoid any wet food in jelly or gravy-bad for the teeth and can make them more "portly".

Sorry, yes, I misread that as "gluten free" - indeed, it does contain rice, just not wheat/gluten.
