Rehoming

Hi all, I was wondering how I would go about rehoming a cat? It breaks my heart to even think about it but lately my two cats have been weeing and pooing everywhere in like a gang war and I'm pregnant and have two kids already and just not coping well. I know they deserve better as they're obviously not happy. I live in Warwickshire.

Have you taken them to the vet's to rule out medical issues, and tried anything to reduce their stress if it's behavioural? Extra litter boxes, Feliway, Zylkene etc.

If you go down the rehoming route, then through a reputable charity is the absolute best way (never, ever rehome through Facebook, Gumtree etc. as that's how cat end up in the wrongs hands!). There might be a waiting list for a rescue space as it's still kitten season and charities are overwhelmed. You can find a list of charities by area on this website: www.catchat.org/index.php/cat-rescue-centres-uk-ireland but you should check carefully that they are no-kill charities as not all are (avoid the RSPCA!).

i would phone up AVON CAT RESCUE on
01789 750235 or Cramar Cat Rescue and Sanctuary on 01214451840 . they will be able to take them or tell you what to do next. all the best.

Thank you for your response.

Eek! I will definitely check. I want them to be happier not dead!

Haven't taken them to vet as they just seem to be trying to out scent each other and as fun as that is for them, it's hellish for me.

At the moment they're in the kitchen and their beds are in hall with window open so they can come outside and in as they please. I'm going to see if this makes it any easier. Litter boxes I've tried. They just seem like they want to sneak on the carpets and cover scents. Its a conundrum. They're both 3 years old and have had them since kittens. It's so bizarre!! Apart from that they are the most loving funny cats. I'm scratching my head!

Are both neutered? Do they have access to the outdoors?
Also what are you using to clean up? It needs to be an enzyme based cleaner to get the smell properly off; otherwise they will continue going in the same spot.

RayneDash · 15/09/2018 17:34

Both are neutered. What kind of enzyme cleaning spray can I use? I've just been using disinfectant to be honest and trying to mask smell.

i would try the litter tray again. cats like litter the texture of fine sand, they may not use it if they don't like the texture of the litter.

spray the area they are going to the toilet in with this: www.amazon.co.uk/Urine-Smell-Remover-Powered-Delightful/dp/B014C2TY2G/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_199_bs_t_1?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforum-21&refRID=NGXX9EZQMA66DWAQZJN3

DiveBombingSeagull · 15/09/2018 18:37

Have you tried Feliway? I thought it was overpriced rubbish but I can tell when ours have run out as a couple of weeks later mine start acting up.

It could well be that they can sense that you are pregnant too as this often causes cats to behave differently and so they might well stop once you have the baby.

Wolfiefan · 15/09/2018 18:40

I hate to say this but you will struggle to find a new home for cats that mess in the house. You need to get them to a vet. Try and find the reason and a solution. Could be a UTI or anxiety but I doubt they’re doing it for “fun”

Vinorosso74 · 15/09/2018 19:50

Biological laundry detergent has the enzymes to break down any odours so use that where they pee.

RayneDash · 15/09/2018 20:26

@divebombingseagull I think you're on to something there. It has become very apparent that the problem has been when I'm pregnant. They were fine before.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will try the feliway as I too thought it was overpriced rubbish.

I don't think they're doing it for fun, I think it's become cat warfare and they're trying to out stink each other.

I use simple solution extreme Stain and odour remover Op

Amazon have it

Wolfiefan · 15/09/2018 20:36

We have two sisters. They need to be able to get away from each other. They used to be fine but now it’s full out warfare if they are shut up together.
Separate places to sleep.
Separate food and water bowls in different places.
Separate litter trays.
And lots of room for them to get away from each other!
Still worth a check one doesn’t have a UTI. If one is ill and peeing the other may be trying to mask the stench!

RayneDash · 15/09/2018 21:03

@wolfiefan that's a very good point actually. I've had them three years and they're still an enigma to me. Will take them to the vet just to have a health MOT

Ha. Our tortie sisters (phone changes to torture!) are unlike any other cats I’ve ever met.
We did have a boy who would pee inappropriately. Was cystitis. He used to go on plastic bags. The smell?!
Sometimes cats also pee if they feel threatened. Any chance other cats can get in the cat flap or are hanging around outside and bothering yours?
Hope you get it sorted. Good luck.

Get this OP from The Range or Sainsburys.
Rug Doctor Urine Eliminator £4.99. I've tried it when the cat kept missing the tray and weeing on the carpet. The smell really does piss off.
