At the end of my tether with fleas

My cat started over grooming herself and pulling her fur out a few days ago, took her to the vet and it turns out she has fleas again even though I've treated her and her sister with frontline plus monthly and there were no signs of fleas a few weeks ago when she got her booster vaccination. We had an infestation last year and I treated the cats, house and set a monthly calendar reminder for frontline spot on but they're back again. Vet has recommended bravecto and RIP Flea spray for the house, I really hope it works because these seem to be some breed of super hardy frontline-immune fleas. My house now stinks like a chemical spill from the spray.

Frontline is pretty much useless now. Most fleas are immune to it.

dementedpixie · 07/09/2018 19:24

I've heard frontline is not very effective any more. Mine get stronghold plus and before that had advocate

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 07/09/2018 19:26

Stronghold or Advocate are the only things my vet will give for fleas now. Frontline ( and Effipro which has the same ingredient) are useless.

Lindy2 · 07/09/2018 19:27

We use advocate from the vets. I think some of the over the counter treatments like frontline are not as good.

ShowOfHands · 07/09/2018 19:27

Frontline stopped being effective at least 6 years ago.

To get rid of the infestation in your house, put out bowls of soapy water (weak Fairly Liquid solution) on the floor in key areas. Shine an angle-poise lamp onto the bowl. The fleas will be attracted to the light and land in the water, where they can’t escape. Move them around to new areas when you stop catching fleas.

QueenNovo · 07/09/2018 19:33

That's one cat done, just waiting for the other to appear. The bravecto stuff is meant to do up to 12 weeks so hopefully it will get rid of them.

I use a Seresto collar for my cat. It’s the best thing I’ve used for him.
For flea sprays, the best I’ve found is indorex and flea bombs.
Hope you get sorted.

Lynne1Cat · 07/09/2018 19:54

Frontline is useless - I used to use it on my cats, but apparently, fleas are resistant to the stuff nowadays. I use Bravecto, from the vet. I also use a spray around the house - you need to do carpets, rugs, all soft furnishings, anywhere that the cat goes - beds, stairs, everywhere. Skirting boards too

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 07/09/2018 19:55

Yup, so the house and use something from your vet on the cat, it will work, I promise! Good luck!

Our cat had a terrible infestation at the start of the summer. My DM came and fed him while we were on holiday for a week and when we got back he'd lost so much weight I thought he was dying and the house was literally jumping with fleas.

The vet said Advocate was the best treatment and we used Indorex spray in the house which killed them all.

Happy to report that he's much better now and had regained some weight.

QueenNovo · 07/09/2018 19:59

House is all done, RIP Fleas has good online reviews so hopefully that's it.

Stronghold is the only thing that worked for my cats at almost £10 a vial from the vets! Frontline is totally useless.

QuestionableMouse · 07/09/2018 20:19

You can also use table salt on your carpets overnight to kill the little buggers. Hoover it up and repeat as needed.

serbska · 08/09/2018 18:18

Advocate for the cat.
Indorex for the house and regular hoovering to wake the fuckers up so they die.

I used frontline to start with and got caught out!

nickEcave · 10/09/2018 10:41

Did Indorex deal with the fleas all in one go Serbska? I think we've got fleas - haven't actually seen any but we were late with our cat's Advocate last month and noticed that she was scratching and I was getting bitten. I covered the whole house in Indorex about 10 days ago and have been hoovering but I am still getting bitten when I sit on the sofa in the evening.

QuestionableMouse · 10/09/2018 13:59

If your sofa is cloth you'll need to spray that too.

LittleDonkeyKong · 10/09/2018 21:44

I use comfortis from the vets for my cats. It's awesome! Within 15 minutes you are picking dead fleas off them!
